Pillows for Toddlers?

When should a child start using a pillow at night?  Does it need to be a 'toddler pillow' or is a regular one fine?  Do I wait until he's moved out of the crib?

Re: Pillows for Toddlers?

  • personally i think its a 'when you feel comfortable' issue-

we gave one to gisele at 21 months I guess- that was when we went on our cruise to the bahamas- the rent a crib has a pillow in it and she LOVED it. When we came back home we felt ok with giving her one. we just gave her a reg pillow

  • DD's been sleeping with a pillow pet since she was 13 months. I noticed that she was rolling up her blanket at night to sleep on so I thought she might be ready for a pillow. It took her a few nights to figure it out, but she loves it now.

  • DS1 started using one around 14 months when he had a cold.  The pedi. said to use a adult pillow that was firm.

  • I know it's all what each family is comfortable with, but now I feel like the odd one out.  We put one in our sons crib around 12 months.  He started rolling up his blanket to sleep on, and when he laid on our bed or the couch with us he wanted a pillow.  He sleeps great since we gave him one.

We just use a regular pillow, it fills the top quarter of his crib which he loves, he will turn sideways and sleep all on the pillow some nights.

  • Thanks for the great responses!  I think he is ready then - He immediately takes the blanket I lay over him, crumples it up and lays down on it.

  • I gave my daughter one at 15 months when we moved her from a crib to a toddler bed- it was an older one and it was/is pretty dang flat lol, but she likes having it :)

  • My DS is 20 months and he's been sleeping with one for several months now. I think I gave my DD2 one even earlier than that - probably closer to 12 months. They were both regular pillows.

  • Parker didn't get one until Christmas- about 3 1/2.  The ONLY reason she got one is because it's a Pillow Pet.  But I've found they are a great size for her little head (she's tall, but tiny for her age).

I made one for Rowan a bit smaller than Parker's and she has been using it since March.

So, I say a pillow pet is a great idea.
