S/O Childbirth Classes (clicky)

The post below got me thinking about childbirth classes, so I looked up the info on the hospital's website.  Due to my husband's work schedule, our best bet would be to take the weekend course.  I just don't know how soon we should take the class.  Maybe y'all can help me out.[Poll]

  • I'm leaning towards September.

August would be good, but we'll be getting back into town from visting family in Texas the Friday before.  I'd hate to be delayed, and have to miss the class.  (ETA: We've never had problems before (thank God) but you just never know.)

October seems like I would be cutting it close.

I was hoping the website would say the suggested time to take the class.  But it only suggests the time to register by.  Thanks for the input.

  • I'm doing mine at 34 weeks.  I think they said I should do the childbirth prep between 32 and 36 weeks, then the class on coping with childbirth the natural way after that.

  • Depends on how long the class is and what you want to get out of it.  If you intend to go natural, I'd say the earlier that better.  Last PG I started my class at 17 weeks which gave me plenty of time to make it through the 6 week course and then also practice techniques and go over my wishes with my doctor.  Some courses can be as long as 12 weeks long, so even the earliest of those dates would be pushing it.

They are all weekend courses.  The classes are Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm.

Gotcha.  Just 1 weekend.  I'd still do the earliest one.

  • October would definitely be cutting it close! I had my son at 36wks! I picked September, but August would still be fine too!

  • I'm actually doing mine in July at 20 weeks.  DH is away for work atleast once a month and we don't always know ahead of time when it will be so the weekly classes weren't an option.  We had intended on doing August/September but we will be away the weekends it is being held.  So we opted for July.  After talking to my OB about how early we were doing it I decided the earlier the better so I can have extra time to talk to my OB about any questions/concerns I have.

  • The hospital we are going to suggests you take their course 3-5 weeks prior to your due date. Ours is a five week course starting in late Aug and going to late Sept. I would go for the Sept course as first preference and have the Aug as a backup.

  • I would do August or September.  DH and I have classes scheduled for August and September.  I would be nervous about waiting until October.  You don't know how you are going to feel or if LO comes early, you want to be prepared.

  • We took ours about 2 months before DD was born, so I say September for sure.

  • I don't think I'm going to take one. My mom is going to be in the room with me and she was an L&D nurse for 25+ years, and my best friend will be in there and she has three kids, so I think I should be well covered lol

  • I'm doing mine in September as well.  My hospital only offers the classes every other month, so my choices are September, November (eek, way too close!), or July, which seems way too early.
