I am planning to talk to our pediatrician, but I wanted to ask other moms ...
Since the end of February, Isaac has had four throw-up viruses. (Technically, the last one just started a little while ago, but I am thinking it is a virus.) So ... four throw-up sicknesses in the last four months (two just this month). Also in that time, he had a cut on his finger that got infected (not necessarily related, but just putting that out there). To me, that seems excessive. Like, why is he getting sick all the time? Kate typically has gotten one throw-up sickness a year.
Would you be concerned that something else might be going on ... or do you think I am being paranoid and that it is just a kid getting kid sicknesses, etc.? Thanks!
Re: Do you think this is excessive?
I think it is definitely worth mentioning. Does he eat yogurt or take any kind of probiotic supplement? If not, that might help get his gut back in a healthy balance.
Poor guy, I hope he feels better soon
Does he ever have any other symptoms along with the vomiting?
I do think it sounds like a lot; however, since he started life in a different country, it may just be him adjusting to our particular population of microbes. I'm wondering if maybe your water at home or something else at home could be contaminated with something that is making him sick. Maybe something that you and the rest of the family have encountered before, but that represents the first time(s) his system is exposed??
Have other kids around him also gotten sick? Like, can you identify the source of his illness? If not, it makes me think that something environmental may be going on with him. Since he is much younger than everyone else in the house, he could be more susceptible to any microbes or hazards than the rest of you. Just my totally uninformed $.02. I'm curious to hear what your pediatrician has to say...
I have wondered the same thing (and even a friend or two has mentioned it). DH thinks he is just a kid getting sick--one thing he said when I brought it up is that he didn't start getting sick like this (though he did have colds/runny nose/etc.) until the end of February, and he came home last July. So I don't know.
On the other hand, DH (a physician but not a pediatrician) tends to kind of downplay when any of us gets sick. LOL! I mentioned this to our pediatrician, who said he has done that, too. (He said it's because they see so much serious illness that one of their own kids has to have a limb barely hanging on to get some attention. He was joking, of course, but you get the idea.) ANYWAY ... having said that, when my Mom was so sick and was here last year, I thought she just had a stomach virus. DH came home from work, took one look at her and said, "She needs to go to the ER NOW."
But I have wondered if his exposure in Korea and now exposure in the U.S. is playing a role in these illnesses. The first and third times he got sick, he was the only one in the house who was sick. (The second time, we ALL got sick--though he was the first.) And this time remains to be seen. The thing is, it does usually happen after he has been in the nursery at church (took him to the drop-off nursery at our church Wednesday and Thursday mornings) or played somewhere where a bunch of kids are (CFA indoor playground--earlier this month just before he got sick). But maybe that is just coincidence. I have no idea if other kids were sick at those places.
I am rambling. Thanks for your input. It helps to know others think four times in four months (plus a cut that got infected) is a lot. Because I think it is.

P.S. Forgot to answer some questions. He does eat yogurt. And he has a high fever right now. Just gave him some tylenol about 25 minutes ago though, so I am keeping an eye on it.
Thanks, Ladies!

Owen had 2 stomach viruses and strep throat in about a 2 1/2 month period last fall. Each of the stomach viruses lasted with 2 weeks of diarrhea. Just awful! I was really getting concerned that he had an allergy of some kind or something else was going on. He has never been sick that much even after starting daycare last summer in July. He had the runny nose/daycare funk, but no big illnesses, then all of a sudden he can't stay well.It freaked me out.
Anyway, the doctors kept telling me it was just a virus and that they can last awhile. Also with stomach viruses, once they get them, they can have a tendency to get it again because they call it "slick gut syndrome". Basically the original virus had messed up the lining of the GI track and left it compromised for another virus to attack it.
I think it is worth talking to the pedi about, just in case, but it is entirely possible that this is just his sucky time of catching everything. I will say that in our case the pedi was correct. We finally got over it and have been mostly ok since. He has had a couple of viruses and an ear infection since last November, but I think that is mostly due to daycare and just being more exposed to other kids. Yours could be the nursery at church, plus he is exposed to Kate and all of her friends.
I am sorry he is sick and I know it is horrible for all of you. They are so pitiful with stomach stuff, not to mention the gross factor and having to clean up so much stuff. I hope he gets better soon and that all of you don't catch this round.
