Measurement..??

I had my 37 week check up today. Everything looks good, and I got to see "my" doctor today. He checked the height of my uterus, and after he did this, i asked him if he could tell how big the baby was. DS was 6lb 14oz at birth, and I was curious if he had any idea of how big baby was. His response was "He'll be bigger than your first...your measuring 39 inches". ok...is that supposed to correspond with the weeks of gestation? I should have asked him that but I got sidetracked by MH and his wonderful questions to the dr.

So, does anyone know if the height in inches correlates to the amount of weeks? He also said that he would be highly surprised if I made it to my EDD (which I laughed at) because of my 2cm, 70% and +2 position. I am not holding my breath, and found that to be I think more for MH to shut up about it.

Re: Measurement..??

  • Are you sure he didn't mean 39cm? 39 inches is alot.  When I was 36 weeks I measured 36 cm, and everyone kept telling me how huge i was so I googled it. What I found was that your ute should be measuring around the same number of cm as you are weeks along +/- 2cm if I remember correctly.

  •  I think you are correct that the height correlates with the weeks usually.  but I think its in cm not inches.  I had found a good chart that showed what average was during each week ect. but cant find it now. if you google fundal height chart or fundal height measurement you should be able to read some more info about it. but at my 34 week appointment  I think I was 33 or 34 cm which N.P. said was right on track

  • I feel like a goober for that one. He actually just said 39, so I assumed he meant inches. That explains why I couldn't find anything on google about it. Forgive my pregnant brain here ;) I appreciate your help though. I just wish I knew what LO would weigh. I am actually nervous about that, especially when my lovely H tells me I am sooo much bigger with LO than I was with DS. How sweet, right?

the others are right. you're "supposed" to be 35 cm at 35 weeks, so on and so forth. that's just an estimate for doctors. depending on how you carry can make a difference sometimes. my doc never tells me a guess about baby's size. he just says "you're measuring where you should be, so he's at a healthy size for his age. that's all we can know for sure". and that's fine with me.

now i do have some growth ultrasounds under my belt. we've had two and the most recent was at 28 weeks i think (i can't remember anything these days). at 28 weeks he was almost 4 pounds and they said his head was measuring in the 95%. These things are wrong MANY times. in fact, the sono tech always says "well it looks like our estimate puts him at 4lbs... give or take 2lbs." so they could be WAY off. What i'm trying to say it "knowing" the size of the baby isn't always right. and could set you up to be freaked out by a huge baby that ends up being pretty average.

  • Honestly, I don't think there is any correlation.  With my first I measured right on and my daughter was born one day early at 5 pounds 3 ounces and 19 1/2 inches long.  My MW estimated by feeling that the baby would be around 6 pounds.  When I delivered she said, "see, that is why I don't like to guess what the weight is."

This exactly^ My doc says the same +/- 2cm is norm.

  • As others have said cm= gestation weeks +/- 2 cm. I've been measuring 2 cm short (2 weeks behind) ever since week 29ish but the sonogram put the baby at 6 pounds 7 oz (give or take 2 pounds) so who knows what is going to happen.
  • My MW also gave me the +/- 2cm rule.  I asked her once if they'd ever be able guess and how big baby is since I won't be having anymore schedule u/s and she said they'd know when the baby came out!

P.S.   My belly feels so huge that sometimes I think 36 inches might be about right...
