Searching for Pediatrician

Hello!  I've still got until Thanksgiving, but thought while I have all this free time I might as well start doing my research.  I was wondering if anyone could recommend a pediatrician they love.  I have some criteria, but would love any suggestions!

We plan to space out vaccinations rather than getting a bunch at one time, so I need a pediatrician who is okay with that.  If all goes according to plan I'd like to breastfeed for the first year or two, so I'm wanting a pediatrician who is supportive of that as well.

And a friend suggested recently that I look for an office that has a waiting room for those who are there for regular wellness checks and another for sick call patients.

Can anyone help?

Kate

  • What area are you looking for?

I am in Westminster, and absolutely LOVE Dr. scobie.  They do have two waiting rooms, and after 3 peditricians, he is the only one who helped my daughter's acid reflux.

  • I live in the city of Baltimore.  But if I find a great pediatrician in another town, I'm all for traveling.
  • I LOVE Dr. Beams in Columbia.  She doesn't have a separate waiting room, but that has never been a problem for us.  At her Columbia location there has only been another child in the waiting room w/us for about 1-2 minutes.  She is very accessible (text messages, email, phone, facebook) and supportive of breastfeeding.  (I am still bf my son and we are delaying his vaxes until 2 and she hasn't had a problem w/either).  She does ask that you only talk about the vaxes w/her as some of her staff is uncomfortable discussing it.  I highly recommend scheduling an interview w/her.

I've heard great things about Dr. Beams, too. My insurance doesn't cover her, so we ended up going with Dr. Chang at the Pediatric Center in Catonsville. He is perfectly fine doing whatever with the vaccinations. (The office will tell you that they follow the CDC schedule, but individual Dr.'s vary.)

  • I saw a study recently (but don't recall where) that said having seperate sick and well waiting rooms doesn't actually have any clinical benefit, statistically there is not improvement in the incidence of healthcare acquired infections.

Also, i just wanted to mention that if your doctor does Family Medicane they can act as the Ped for your child.  We take our DD to a family practice and it is nice that all of us see the same doctor.

  • I really like Dr. Yeh at GBMC.  I wanted to space out the vaccines as well, and never once did she have anything negative to say about it, she just created us a new schedule.  She also does encourage breastfeeding.
  • I second Dr. Beams! She is a awesome.

  • Thanks ladies!  I think I'll definitely be interviewing Dr. Beams, since she seems to get such glowing recommendations!  And Columbia is convenient to near where DH works, so it would be perfect for days where I wanted to be down there for shopping on base or grabbing lunch with him!

She also is sometimes at the Laurel location w/her mom and that is about 10 min from Ft. Meade as well ;)

  • I see Dr lancaster in Ellicott City, she spaces out vaxes and she is supportive of breastfeeding, even suggesting I tandem nurse when I said I wanted to get pregnant again when other doctors were telling me I had to wean.

  • I live in the city as well.  We plan on using Dr. Brinkman at MD Pediatrics on Falls Road when LO arrives.  Not sure her office has all the criteria you are looking for or not but it is worth looking the office up.  I have heard nothing but great things about the practice.  Good luck!

I personal didn't think it would have much of a difference, until I took dd to the ped. she was coughing, it was from acid reflux, but they put her in the sick waiting room, a few days later she had a cold.  She was never around anyone who would have gotten her sick.
