mederma kids or vit e for scars?

Eliza's scar from her surgery is at the point where we can start putting something on it and I am looking for feedback on which product to use. The scar is at the base of her spine, about 2in long and an inch wide. It is that deep reddish, purple color right now and smooth.

Re: mederma kids or vit e for scars?

  • i have had several surgeries and i always use vitamin e capsules and just pop em open and there had been a definite difference. plus i think you get more for your money and its natural. and i started using it within a week of surgery.

  • I don't know if her scar is in a good place for them, if it's more on the small of her back? Or if it extends further down towards her bottom in the crease there?

But, if it's in a flat spot I highly recommend silicone scar patches.  We've used Epi-Derm and Scar FX and have seen a few other brands at Walgreens and Target.  We've used them on all of Jack's surgical scars on his torso.  They work beautifully for getting rid of the angry red/purple and also for making them flat and smooth.  The best part is you just slap it on and forget about it.  We would take them off at bath time then reapply right after.  There are different kinds.. but you can get washable/reusable ones.  Others are like tape/bandages that stay for a long period of time.  None of them fall of, they stay very, very well.  They work because they keep constant pressure on the scar.

I'm not sure how well they would work in an area that wasn't flat though...

Our derm said vit-e mederma etc. don't do much beyond moisturize, that it's the rubbing/pressure that's most effective for the scars.

Also, just wanted to add, even if you don't do much to it, she's so young that over time her scar will most likely fade dramatically on it's own.  Little one's skin is absolutely incredible in it's ability to heal!

This!  My DH and I both have dyshydrotic eczema, and I've used it on that with great results.  I miss having breast milk on tap, lol.
