Chicken Pox at 1??

Hi ladies. I posted earlier about how my DH got what appears to be the chicken pox 3 weeks after he got himself vaccinated for it since he never got it as a child. DS hasn't gotten the vaccine yet because his doc wants us to wait for DH to get his booster, which he is supposed to get next week.

My question is....I know its better for them to get chicken pox naturally vs the vaccine so I'm now wondering if I shouldn't keep DS away from DH to prevent him from catching it. But for him to get the chicken pox at 1? Is that even good? Obviously if he doesn't catch it from daddy he'll be getting the vaccine himself but just wanted to get your opinions on it.

Would you limit your child's exposure if  their dad had the chicken pox so that they didn't get it, or would you try to get them to catch it too?

  • I've always heard that if kids get them really young then they might not form an immunity to it.  I don't know what's considered "really young" though.

Call your pedi and see what they say.  I would be afraid that he would end up with a severe case and then he (and you) would be miserable!

  • Years ago, a lot of people in our area were having "chicken pox parties"! The idea was that the kids would get chicken pox when they were little, and it was less likely to be severe. (I've always wondered what they did at these parties.) I think times have changed, but I've always thought it takes a really brave person to take their kid to a party knowing that they could come home with the chicken pox.

Anyway, I would avoid exposing my child to any disease because the chicken pox is very uncomfortable, is accompanied by fever, and can make life really miserable for all involved. I'd want to spare my child (and my sanity!) from that if I could. And from what I've heard, the CP vaccine doesn't necessarily prevent them from getting it, it just makes it less severe when they do get it.

  • The PP reminded me that I had chicken pox at age 1 and my doctor said I could get it again.

  • If you son is healthy, I wouldn't take any precautions.  How is it different if he gets it through his dad or though a shot in a few weeks?
