broken arms -- give me your tips and tricks

Elizabeth fell off the playground Thursday at school and broke her arm -- compound fracture of the humerus. She had surgery Thursday night and we came home last night. My poor, brave baby!

She has three pins in her arm and it's wrapped in a bandage and splinted.

But now we have to try to keep her calm and quiet (Hello, doctor? She's two - quiet and calm aren't her thing. See exhibit A: broken arm) until Tuesday when we have a follow up appt. Hopefully they'll put her in a hard cast at that point.

So moms who have been through this, tell me any tips and tricks -- for these first days and for after, once it's in the cast. DH, bless him, had just ordered an iPad to surprise me and it arrived yesterday.

Oh, any waterless shampoo recs? She's a dirty, sweaty mess and no bath until at least Tuesday. Thanks!!

  • OMGoodness -- I'm so sorry.  I don't know how to keep a toddler calm.  Good luck with that, hopefully the iPad and maybe some movies will help?  I'm sure that there will be some discomfort that will naturally keep her at a slower pace?  Good luck until Tuesday, I hope it all goes well.

Poor Baby!  That is so tough, especially during the summer :(  I broke my hand on the 5th of July a few years ago and it just sucked.

I found a cast cover thing for showering and it was GREAT!  here is something similar online but I've seen them at walgreens too.

  • I would say maybe a new movie.  DS would sit and watch mickey mouse clubhouse or movies all day if I let him.  Check out iTot apps for the ipad, they have different ones DH got a few and DS will sit and do those for a while too.

As far as the other stuff no recs.  T&Ps for you and poor DD.  Hang in there momma and just do the best that you can.

  • Believe me I know all about casts. We bought a cast cooler (google it) for Anna, but with her size and the shape of her cast, it couldn't work. If you'd like it, I can sell it to you at half price and ship it right over. It's only been tried once.

  • Thanks, ladies! :)

We took the easy way out and had naptime in the car seat as we ran errands and drove around.

The ipad is charging and almost ready to go.

  • Oh no!  Poor Elizabeth...

I hope she feels better soon.

As for the bath, I'd be tempted just to wash her down with baby wipes and lotion her up.  We do that sometimes when Caroline gets grimy before lunch, and bath isn't until bedtime.

  • Oh Thank you for posting this! I had just searched some tips for my daughters friend  He was in a car wreck, broke his leg and arm, and lost his mom all in two days. The worst part is he will have his casts past his birthday. Enough about me... so here are two tips I found to use for your little girl :)
Keep the arm propped on pillows                           When it is time to bathe, wrap arm in a plastic bag and secure with a rubber band, it will be a good idea to keep arm out of the tub, you know how sneaky water is.                                                I hope I helped because the website won't let me copy and paste... Keep you angel well rested, too
