TMI: a ? about DD stinking

This is a way gross TMI post-so consider yourselves warned!

I noticed tonight that DD's vagina stinks.  I was undressing her for a shower and noticed a smell so I sniffed closer (I know, super gross but I wanted to make sure that's where the smell was coming from) and it is really gross!  She is mostly potty trained, wears pull-ups for the most part but goes potty on her own a good amount of the time.  Is this normal?  Could it just be that wiping isn't thorough enough? About twice a day I clean her with wipes (since she still usually poops in pullups) but the rest of the time we just use a bit of toilet paper.  Anyone else have this problem?  What did you do to fix it?  TIA for any advice!

Re: TMI: a ? about DD stinking

  • Usually we shower with her-even when she does take a bath she doesn't soak at all because she stands up in the bath to play (thus rendering the bath useless in my mind).  We do go swimming most days though-do you think the chlorine could be making it worse?  Or would that sort of qualify as a soak of sorts?

I actually just bought more underwear today in plans to dump the pull-ups.  It was never my intention to use them, but daycare teacher asked for them specifically and DH prefers them for when there is an accident.  Basically it's just being lazy IMO so they are disappearing this weekend.  Smile  Hopefully that will help.

  • I have a DS, but I agree with Fredalina... think how you would feel in a pull-up all day, after going in it a few times - yuck.  Have you thought about going to undies?  She might be ready..  My DS wears undies now, and the cleanup is a breeze compared to diapers.  Give it a try?!

Could she have a yeast infection?

  • I'd make sure she doesn't have an infection (like yeast, etc) or a foreign body (toilet paper). No discharge or itchiness?

Otherwise I'd focus on cleanliness. Use an unscented wipe or a wet washcloth after each time she goes to the bathroom. Be sure you clean well in between her labia each day. I agree that the pullups with the heat/humidity around in the summer could definitely be the culprit. Good luck!

  • No advice, but a funny story to let you know you are not alone.  A friend told her DD that "your tootie smells like catfish, girl!" b/c she wasn't wiping enough at daycare.  Her daughter decided to repeat that phrase...at a funeral.

    This exactly.
