My dr asked me about this and i opted to not get it done...I can still change my mind because i have time to schedule it. It seems like everyone is doing it but i feel like if its not a definite answer i don't want to know. When my cousin was pregnant 11 years ago she had this done and her #'s were high which was not a good thing and she spent her whole pregnancy worried and her daughter is now like the smartest kid i know and perfectly healthy...Im so confused!
Re: does everyone get a NT scan
Another reason I chose not to do it. I would not be willing to risk a mc to do amnio.
A NT scan is a type of u/s that checks the neck of the baby for Down Syndrome.
A NT defects Test also know as a Quad is a blood test that test for Neural Tube Defects.
No such thing as a positive or negative result with this test.
I agree.. we didn't do it with DS 1 and not doing it with this one either. I was tempted to do it to get another peek at the baby but I don't want to worry the whole pregnancy if results come back that the baby "might" have a chance of Down's Syndrome...to me thats unnecessary worry bc it wont change anything!
I'm sorry, but why does someone always feel the need to say this. It's semantics. I think we all understand at this point that it gives you a level of risk. People say positive meaning high risk. It doesn't need to be clarified in every one of these posts.
Yep, this! I am all for modern conveniences, but we'll pass on this one.
Because it's misleading and even though YOU may know that, the OP may not and since she was asking a question about NT scans, it seems like she may not have known that. I'm sorry it bothers you and it's not semantics, it's a fact about the test. An amnio or CVS will give you a positive / negative result, but this will not. I was actually trying to be helpful.

I'm going to go ahead and state what seems to be a very unpopular opinion on TB: It would change our approach if we found out that LO had a major problem at an amnio. I would find it horrible and painful, but we would choose to terminate if LO had a major problem that would leave him with very limited quality of life/short lifespan and cause him/her a lot of pain. So, if the NT scan shows very high risk, it is worth the m/c risk for me to do an amnio. This seems to be a perspective that doesn't get expressed much on TB and I wanted to put it out there.
This is a very personal decision and I understand and respect that many of you would not make the same choice.
I respect that choice. Not everyone has what it takes to raise a child with disabilities. I think it's honorable of you to aknowledge that ahead of time. You'll get no flames from me on this one.
exactly this!
