does everyone get a NT scan

My dr asked me about this and i opted to not get it done...I can still change my mind because i have time to schedule it. It seems like everyone is doing it but i feel like if its not a definite answer i don't want to know. When my cousin was pregnant 11 years ago she had this done and her #'s were high which was not a good thing and she spent her whole pregnancy worried and her daughter is now like the smartest kid i know and perfectly healthy...Im so confused!

Re: does everyone get a NT scan

  • we didn't with  my dd and won't with this one either. It makes no difference to me whether the results are positive or not, doesn't change anything, I'm still going to be pregnant for 9 months and still going to have a baby at the end. My dr also mentioned that what your cousin went through is very common. Its not unusual to get a positive result and everything is fine.

  • We didn't with DS and aren't for this one either. You will find that there are actually a lot of mommas on here not doing it. Once of my many reasons was like you we know a couple of people hwo got "high risk" results and had a lot of stress and anxiety only to have perfectly healthy babies. Don't we have enough to worry about??

  • I'm doing it--if I get a high risk result, I will do an amnio, to know for sure. I'm in the more information is better camp.

  • Didn't get it last time and won't get it this time either. We don't do any additional testing. For us it wouldn't change anything at all.

Another reason I chose not to do it. I would not be willing to risk a mc to do amnio.

  • i think i am going to stick with my original no about getting this done... We have plenty to worry about already and i would not do an amnio personally either...to much of a risk....Thank you ladies for your input!

  • I'm not planning to do one either. It wouldn't change anything for me, except make me worry for the next six months if my results were high. I'd rather enjoy my pregnancy and take the baby as he or she comes. If there is something wrong, we will deal with it when the baby comes. Worrying won't change a thing.

  • No such thing as a positive or negative result with this test.

I agree.. we didn't do it with DS 1 and not doing it with this one either. I was tempted to do it to get another peek at the baby but I don't want to worry the whole pregnancy if results come back that the baby "might" have a chance of Down's Syndrome...to me thats unnecessary worry bc it wont change anything!

  • We didn't/wont do it either. The results do not matter.

  • My doc doesn't offer them.  Not sure why.  She does do the quad screen though which I got last time and will do again.

I'm sorry, but why does someone always feel the need to say this. It's semantics. I think we all understand at this point that it gives you a level of risk. People say positive meaning high risk. It doesn't need to be clarified in every one of these posts.

  • I am getting one done, the results wont change my feelings for this LO. I guess Im not getting the whole, "it wont change anything" statement. For me, I just want any information I can get. I think it's a very personal choice.

  • We got one. My husband needed the peace of mind so I compromised and had it done. I figured if our results were high risk then it would be nice to be prepared at the very least. It was not something I would have chosen to do independently. Plus, it was nice to see baby again.

Yep, this! I am all for modern conveniences, but we'll pass on this one.

  • we didn't with DD.  The only reason we'd get one with this LO is b/c I want that extra US that my insurance will cover.  But since I know that's not the best reason I still haven't made up my mind.

  • Were not having it done.  We'll be having a few u/s so I'm sure we'll be able to see if anything is going on.

Because it's misleading and even though YOU may know that, the OP may not and since she was asking a question about NT scans, it seems like she may not have known that. I'm sorry it bothers you and it's not semantics, it's a fact about the test. An amnio or CVS will give you a positive / negative result, but this will not.  I was actually trying to be helpful.

She's just trying to be helpful.  Everyone may not be opening all of the NT posts and she's just trying to help keep people with questions informed. NBD Confused

  • I am going to get it.  I am 39 so I have a higher risk.  If the probabilities come back low, great.  If the risk is high, I will probably do an amnio.  I believe in being prepared. If I were to have a child with Down's, I would make very different decisions regarding work, finances, etc.  I would want to educate myself as much as possible and mentally be prepared for a special needs child.

I'm going to go ahead and state what seems to be a very unpopular opinion on TB: It would change our approach if we found out that LO had a major problem at an amnio. I would find it horrible and painful, but we would choose to terminate if LO had a major problem that would leave him with very limited quality of life/short lifespan and cause him/her a lot of pain. So, if the NT scan shows very high risk, it is worth the m/c risk for me to do an amnio. This seems to be a perspective that doesn't get expressed much on TB and I wanted to put it out there.

This is a very personal decision and I understand and respect that many of you would not make the same choice.

I respect that choice. Not everyone has what it takes to raise a child with disabilities. I think it's honorable of you to aknowledge that ahead of time. You'll get no flames from me on this one.

  • We decided at our 8w appt. we didn't want to get it done. Because of my age, i'm almost as low as the risk gets. When he double checked with us at our 12w appt. and we had a chance to talk about it, he confirmed my thoughts and basically told me that as long as we wouldn't terminate due to a risk then there was no need to get the test done, and reminded me a downs or SB baby needs to specific care immediately after birth, so we have time to prepare ourselves either way.

    exactly this!

  • We did the test.  It's non-invasive and I'll be 35/36 at delivery, so we felt that it was important to know.  If the test comes back with a high risk ratio, we'd likely do an amnio and would consider whether we wanted to continue with the pregnancy.  I can't say for sure what we'd do in this situation, but we both feel that it's important to have more information.  Based on the NT measurement (1.5mm), it looks like we're in good shape, but we'll know more when the bloodwork comes back next week.
