Belly piercing?

I got my belly button pierced years ago, and I kept the jewelry in until I barely began to show. Well, now I've got a biiig baby bump, but the hole won't close. It's just getting, ehrm, bigger with me... It's kinda sore, and red and irritated looking, almost bruise-y like. I'm not sure what to do? I'm afraid the skin will just tear. Advice?

Re: Belly piercing?

  • Ouch...I never heard of the ring hole strecthing and bruising. I would ask your doctor on advice. I do know you You can get a special pregnancy belly button ring but not sure if that will help in your situation. Good Luck!

  • I would talk to your dr. I asked about mine and he said I could leave it in until it starts hurting or getting red and mine is still in and I'm 38wks and 2days. I was actually told usually it is best to leave something in the hole. I would definately bring it up.

  • :-/ I don't have much advice... I've had mine pierced twice, so I had scar tissue and mine started to hurt because of that. I took mine out because of the scar tissue and the fact that the hole was just streatching, I guess the bottom was irritated because it closed and is kinda scared, I know it will be inside my belly button after baby, so I've been trying to keep it moisturized and using scar stuff to lighten the scar and hopefully keep it flexible so I don't get stretch marks off of it... But I'm just gonna wait and see what my belly looks like after kids and get it repierced if it's still worth showing off;)

  • I wondered the same thing... Mine is stretching side ways, and is a bit sore. Every once and a while i will put the belly ring through the whole.. it still goes through and ive had it out since I was about 3 months.. I put polysporin on the part that is irritated lookin.. Im not sure what else to do about it..

  • I would have never realized this if the lady in one of the videos from childbirth preparedness class didn't have her belly button pierces, but apparently it is not only normal but they sell special jewelery for it.

The stretching is normal enough, but if it's too red and irritated, bring it up to you doctor.

  • Not much you can do. Mine did the same thing while pregnant with DD and afterwards I ended up with 2 giant stretch-marks going through it and a nasty scar on it. I can no longer wear a stud my body has started to reject the hole. I was told it make eventually close up but there will always be the skin over the top wear the stud would through. Basically you will always be able to tell it was at one point pierced. I hope yours does not end up like mine. GL
  • I think it's just how some woman's get.  My SIL has a huge red scar where her belly button ring was.  Mine looks the same as before and this is my second pregnancy.  I actually think I could still wear a belly button ring, but I took it out with my first and never put it back in.  Mine has never been red or gotten any bigger.  My belly button never popped with my first though either.  I'm guessing it just has something to do with how your skin is stretching.  I would ask your OB at your next appt.

Mine wasn't bruised, but the skin over the hole definitely got stretched a lot! To the point where the skin over the hole was so tight that I probably couldn' have even gotten dental floss in there. lol

After the baby it is a little bit looser if I look hard, but hardly noticeable and still looks really cute!

  • I got my belly button pierced a few years back..and actually took the ring out about a year ago.  It is not getting bigger but it is red.  i don't think it will tear..but I am not an expert.

  • Thanks for all the advice, girls! I never would have known there's specific jewelry for pregnancy. The "Its a Boy/Girl" ones are frickin' cute!! I'll talk to my MW about it next visit. Hopefully it'll shrink up after LO, because I can pull jewelry right through it, top ball and everything. Here's hoping!
