Birth control question

I'm blowing up this board right now, sorry! Hah.

I had my 6 week appointment today and the doctor gave me the "mini pill". I didn't even know something like this existed and I was so set on asking him about why I was still bleeding bright red that I didn't even talk about the birth control. I wasn't on a mini pill before, I was on a regular combo pill until we were TTC , does anyone know the big difference between them? I mean, I know why one is called combo and one is called mini but has anyone tried both and found preference or side affects?

Appreciate any feedback in advance :)

Re: Birth control question

  • From my understanding the mini pill is what is normally used while BF-ing and you have to be incredibly consistent when taking it for it to work properly.

This- the combo pill has estrogen that dry you up. The mini pill is progesterone only.

  • I was given the mini-pill too and it scares me.  Just doesn't seem as effective... It's still early in my recovery (I'm supposed to start taking it in a few weeks), and I'll be researching other options just so I feel better informed.

  • I just started the mini-pill. My doctor says she often gives the regular combo pill to nursing mothers without any problem, but I decided I didn't want to risk my milk supply. I'm also still nursing around the clock, so the odds of me ovulating are nearly zero in the first place. I'm comfortable with the mini pill, and so far have no problem taking it within a 1 hour window of time each day.

Reported failure rates are the same for the pill an the mini-pill. If you use it correctly, it works.

So you are saying that the mini pill and stuff like the IUD have the same failure rate as long as you take the mini pill at the same time everyday? (Sorry for the stupid Q, I am just scared of the mini pill because I have heard it's not reliable, and I am highly considering it.)

Here is the American Pregnancy's take on BC:https://www.americanpregnancy.org/preventingpregnancy/birthcontrolfailure.html

According to them the mini pill has a higher fail rate then an IUD and I would be willing to bet it is mainly because of human error. And IUD in inserted and you can forget about it, but it is more of a long term BC because it has to be inserted and removed in office compared to the pill which can be stopped when ever you want.

No, I was only comparing the pill to the mini-pill. I looked at a bunch of places trying to see how much worse it was, and they all reported ~5% failure. An IUD much more effective.

LAM is 98% effective anyway in the first 6 months. So I may switch to a combo pill once I hit 6 months. I haven't decided yet.

  • Thanks girls. I am thinking about going on the mini pill and then switching to a combo at 6 monts also.
