Allergies are the new little black dress

Where I live you are nobody unless you have several food sensitivities andtalk about it nonstop. For example, being gluten intolerant has become the new craze, along with lactose intolerant. Everyone's child is also afflicted with these maladies. When a child misbehaves, moms say "Oh! He must have had a milk product at school!" And off they go to a chinese herbalist or to have a colon cleanse. I am VERY sick of this. At my last job I was eating fruit salad for lunch and a sandwich. The ladies I was working with were utterly shocked, and very self-righteous. They told me that the fruit would make me fat, and that the sandwich was SO bad because the bread had wheat in it and there as...gasp...CHEESE! Now my friends are all becoming raw-foodists and doing the juice diet. I am all for being healthy, but this is just ridiculous.DH has a plan that the next time someone begins to orate about their gluten allergy, he is going to explain in graphic detail about how he gets diarrhea when he eats fish. No one wants to hear about your food issues!!!

Re: Allergies are the new little black dress

  • That is odd.  As someone with genuine and painful food allergies, I don't find it fun to talk about. People often pester me to explain because they find it freaky.  It's an annoying medial condition that prevents me from enjoying otherwise healthy and tasty food.  So, ignore them.  They sound a bit crazy.

Yes, there are certain benefits given certain ancestries/genetic histories to avoiding gluten and dairy products, but that doesn't mean everyone should.

  • do you live in Southern California? We used to live in OC and I found this was common there. Up here, not so much.

Oh no...and then when my baby gets older...everyone will have a kid that is "gifted." Is there no escape?

Not in California, but in the closest thing to California: Colorado. Here, it is child abuse to feed a kid nonorganic foods and cows milk must be replaced with coconut milk. True story: at my old work (with the ladies I mentioned above) a mother donated a crate of Kraft macaroni to the hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The staff and other moms were OUTRAGED because Kraft mac and cheese is "poison" and they should have donated Amy's brand. Um..powdered cheese is powdered cheese.

  • See - as someone with food allergies that really annoys me. Unless I have a question about the ingredients of the food in front of me I never talk about it. Why? Because NO ONE CARES. Just like no one cares that I am flat footed or have double jointed thumbs or flunked out of freshman art class. Its just a part of my life, not something that makes me cool or special. And really, there is nothing cool or special about having my throat swell after eating banana bread.

I would definitely follow your husband's suit and be as graphic as possible when someone brings it up. Or, since I'm pregnant and no longer have a filter, just straight up tell them that I don't care and am craving a Big Mac at the moment.
