Preemies

35-week preemie moms

I'm such a newbie all over again :)

Did your 35 weekers take a little time to "catch up" or did they mainly act on their actual age from the get go?  Did they have some lag?

I'm just curious.  Elliott is a really fussy kid - very little awake time and when he is he rages - just curious when he still start to show some early milestones like smiles, interest in toys, etc.  He is a month old but just 0 adjusted age!  I would expect some lag I guess, but not sure what is typical.  I'm just looking for some things to look forward to with this extremely fussy kid.

K is 11 weeks (born at 35 weeks, measuring 32 weeks) and just this week did we start to get just a few smiles and cooing.
She also rolled over 4 times during tummy time on Sunday, but nothing since then.

I expect her to be slower than even most 35 weekers, but I really need some more soon!!

  • My son was born at 35w, and it took him a few extra weeks to catch up with the developmental milestones.  He's 2 now, and he's where he should be developmentally, but he's still in the 25% for height and weight.
  • Zane was always about a month behind on milestones based on the other kids his age in our moms' group.  He was born at 35.5wks and the only preemie in his age group.  I'd say his being 'behind' lasted until about six months.  He was late to smile, late to discover his hands, hold toys, roll over, etc.

Once he started solids and sitting up on his own, I stopped scrutinizing for differences.  By that point, I knew that he was going to do everything in his own time.  Now, he's ahead of some full term babies his age in some aspects (sippy cup, army crawling) and still behind other babies (not cruising yet).

  • p.s. My child is massive and born on the charts for actual age :) ha.  He was 7 lb 1 oz and is probably 9 lb now...lmao!  he's 25% for weight, 30% for height for actual age!

    Lol!  I love big boys!

Zane was 7lb2oz at birth.  I don't remember the percentiles from then, but he was on the charts. Now he is 26lb2oz and over 100th% for weight and head, 94th% for height.

  • Hey lemen, my fellow TAC mama!

Isaac has been consistently 3-5 weeks behind.  He smiled for realz at about 8-10 weeks, then responsively at about 12.  That was the hardest milestone because I just wanted him to like me!  LOL.

Growth-wise, he's catching up but still has a teeny tiny head (50% for 35 weekers).

  • I had a 36 weeker and we had a ~3 week lag on the smiles.  He hasn't rolled over completely yet either.  Expect a little delay and then you can be happy if he's ahead of schedule.

  • My daughters were born at 34w5d and I felt like there was some slight lag for the really early milestones like smiling, but by the time they were 6-12months old they were always hitting milestones right in the normal range, but not early. They sat up at 7ish months, crawled at 9ish, and were walking well at 14 months. By the time they were 18 months old they were completely caught up.

  • I think it's fair to expect some delay, but it's not for sure that he will be. My Iris was born at 33wks 6days and she isn't delayed at all anymore. She was always a little late with the social skills, like smiling, cooing, eye contact, and laughing. But not too much at all. Nothing even really worth mentioning in Dr. visits. she has always been either right on track for her actual age-or just bordering on the low/normal range. As for physical development-she is very much normal and always has been. No delay. She is 5.5 months old, actual age right now and she rolls both ways (has for a month), she laughs, coos, babbles, holds toys, picks things up and brings them to her mouth, gets up and rocks on her hands and knees, and sits up for short time! There is no more to be expected of her. I don't think the "adjusted age" really applies for long with later preemies. :)

  • Ellery was born at 35 weeks.  She had 2 surgeries and was in the NICU for 3 weeks.  I feel as though she does take a little extra time to meet some of the milestones, yet hits others at her actual age.  I, too, would say close to 3-5 weeks behind or close to her adjusted age.

  • I feel the same as one of the prior posters. DS seems to fall near the end of the normal range on milestones from the beginning, never early, but never late enough to really consider a delay. I'd say he's on par with other kids in his age now with no sign of delay at all. He's 19 months. Size wise he started off small- a little over 4.5lbs, stayed in the 25% for a good year and just recently shot up to 30-40%.

  • Thanks ladies!  I am looking forward to some hopefully happy awake moments and eventually smiles.
  • LO has been close to or on time for most milestones (within 2-3 weeks) but was suuuuuuper fussy until at least 12 weeks and is still very high maintenance. She's intense.
  • Preston has been consistently demonstrating his adjusted age, rather than his actual age throughout his development. after his 12 month appt. it was at 13 months that he demonstrated a couple of the things they asked about (implying to me that he could have been doing them already then). he was doing some, but there were a couple he wasn't doing yet (hand clapping was one that i remember). granted, the next appt. isn't until 18 months now, so there is likely to not be as much of that by then.
