Success after IF

Loved the Midwife! Definitely switching!

Sean & I met with the MW yesterday and we both loved her. We felt right at home and her office had a similar feel to our birthing center in Maryland.

Her philosophy and ours matched up 100%! She has privileges at our local children's hospital and does all the things we are looking for - let me go to 42w, no IV, no continuous monitoring, freedom of movement, limited internal exams, no 24hr delivery after water breaking rule (as long as fluid is clear and no signs of infection),  food and drink during labor, and most importantly WATER BIRTH!!! I am so bummed that I did not get to have the water birth I planned with Eliza and I thought I would never have the chance again, so I am ecstatic to have it back on the table!

She was very complimentary to my MWs in baltimore and made sure I knew how incredible it was that I was able to have a vaginal birth after a 49hr labor with slow progress, water broken for 2 days and an out of position baby. I guess I always knew that the vaginal birth was a gift and was incredibly grateful to my MWs, but it was nice to hear another medical professional agree.

I also loved her approach to pregnancy - it is a whole body experience. At my OB, it is always about the belly & baby. With MWs, they discuss your stress level, nutrition, emotional well being, etc...I didn't realize how much I missed that aspect of my care. She also gave me some great tips - lots of protein right now, carb heavy closer to delivery, cider vinegar for heartburn, a tea tree oil/water spray bottle to use to keep inflammation/irritation in the vaginal area down.

She is a huge advocate of home births, but I am not sure that falls in my comfort zone anymore after my experience with Eliza. I needed to be transferred to the hospital from the birthing center and with my post partum hemorrhage and 3rd degree tear, it was the right decision and I have always been grateful my MWs sent me to the hospital early on when labor stalled instead of in an emergency. She can do everything on my wishlist at the hospital, so I think that is the plan, but as DH said, we are open to the idea.

My only regret is that I didn't switch sooner!

  • Wow!  Is this someone you've known about?  I'm impressed you can still get in with her at 30 weeks! :)

I totally understand your hesitation on homebirths.  My first labor was super long, although you had me beat, LOL, and it scared me too as I debated what to do for #2.

And indeed it is amazing that you had that experience the first time, given that your water had broken and you stopped progressing.  I minimally progressed with Kira (OB, but one who "forced" nothing on me) and my water had broken with Elena (MW) and I'm not sure with the two together I would have been allowed to continue with either the OB or MW.  (Granted I told the MW when my water flow got heavier, not when it started the day before, so in the end it was broken about 38 hours...sssh.)  Still, having someone who will hear your concerns before the heat of the moment should make a BIG difference!

I'm really happy for you! :)

You sneaky girl you! I considered doing the same if I had stayed with my OB...

Thanks! I had known about her, but I hesitated to call her for two reasons: I thought she only did home birth, I didn't know she had hospital privileges and I got complacent in my care. My OB was very good, but it wasn't until we started talking about the birth plan, that I realized how much of a fight/compromise it might be to have the birth I wanted.  I was also nervous early on about baby #2 have spina bifida and ending up high risk, but thankfully, none of that came to pass.

  • I think I was honest at first, but as it kept coming up with various nurses I finally just stuck with the time that seemed more relevant anyway.  There really was minimal fluid all day Tuesday, but I knew what it was! :)  I didn't even call until Wednesday morning after more came out, and she was born at 1am Thursday, but they were definitely watching the clock with that.  Meanwhile, with Kira, I was in bonafide strong labor for 29-30 hours before my OB manually broke my water, LOL.  There was actually nothing that my OB did that I wasn't happy with -- pitocin and c-section came up only with my MW with Elena, never with my OB with Kira -- but I just knew I wanted a MW with #2.

Is it a CNM or CPM?  Here only CPMs do homebirths (illegally, but that's another issue entirely), and all CNMs are at hospitals.  I really wanted a birth center with CNMs for #2, but I couldn't see driving that far (90 minute each way) with Kira in tow that often, so I compromised with a CNM at a hospital, but a different hospital than where I had Kira since even CNMs aren't allowed there.  A hospital can still provide a good experience as you hopefully know! :)

I'm glad you figured it out now!  And I'm just thrilled that she was still able to take you!

  • I'm glad you switched, but I'm biased, I'm always glad when people switch to MWs :) I absolutely love mine and even after all the hairiness with DD1's birth, they've been so good about calming all my fears and being proactive in monitoring this one.

  • I love this post!  What a great shout out to MWs!!!  And I am thrilled that you are so happy with your choices.  I think you are going to have a faboulous birth experience and I just can't wait to read your birth story when this baby comes!  And do what I am doing...believe with all of your being that this baby is going to "fly" out of you as so many 2nd babies do!  While i didn't have a 49 hour labor like you did, I did have my own frustrations (6 hours in transition and 4 hours of pushing) and I truly have to believe that baby #2 is going to be so much easier!

Good luck and I am so excited for you!!

  • Yay!  So glad you found a new MW!  I just did too.  Isn't it a relief??  It's going to be an amazing labor!  I can't wait to hear about it.  You're going to do fabulous!!!
