Biggest Fear About Pregnancy and Labor

Most people have the common fears of pain or not being prepared buy my biggest fear is kinda out there.  I am a teacher and I am afraid that my water is going to break during class one day.  Then I will be forever known as "that teacher whose water broke during health class."  I have no idea what I would do...I teach kind of out in the sticks, 30-40 minutes away from my hospital.  I am panicked about what would happen IF I did go into labor at school...how would I get to the hospital, would I get there in time, who would contact my husband, what would my students do, how would they clean the carpet.  Completely wacky things...but that is my biggest fear about this baby.  What is yours?

Re: Biggest Fear About Pregnancy and Labor

  • My BIGGEST is- morbid- something happening to the baby, like a stillborn. I'm terrified of that.

But I share your fear a little, too. I am taking off work a few weeks ahead of my due date for a number of reasons and I am glad I don't have to worry about going into labour at work.

  • I'm afraid I will have to be indiced and "miss out" on the excitement of it all happening naturally.

On the flip side, I'm also terrified of preterm labor.

  • My biggest fear is a double whammy.....where I deliver one baby vaginally but have to have a c-section to get the second out.  I really do NOT want a c-section, but if I have to have one I'd prefer not to go through labor for hours prior to getting cut open.  However, I'll take the risk if my girls cooperate, because my goal is to have both of them vaginally.  I just need Baby A to be vertex when I go into labor, my OB will manually turn Baby B if necessary (as in, up to her elbows in my ute to turn baby - which is why I'm getting an epi this time LOL)

Ditto. And add in c-section. I have had two vaginal births already but a c-section scares the crap out of me! Of course, baby is number one to me though. As long as she is healthy, bring it on if it is necessary!

  • I think my biggest fear is the pain and not knowing what to expect.  I mean you can go to childbirth classes but everyone is different, so you don't know what can happen when you actually go into labor.  I'm just praying for a happy and healthy baby!

  • I have the normal fears of "am I doing this/that right?' or "what if I'm not ready?," but my biggest labor/delivery fear is having to have c-section!  I DO NOT want to have c-section.  My Mom had to have one with my brother and me.  I hope that's not a sign of things to come...

I am scared of a few things, aside from my biggest that something goes wrong and my baby doesn't make it, here is my list:

    - not knowing I am in labour until it is too late and I have a backseat baby or bathroom baby... eek! (although probably highly unlikely)

-Also Pitocin scares the crap out of me, I want NO pitocin and also the epidural scares me too, I would prefer to not have one.

-And as pp have said I don't wanna poop lol

  • A girl on my local had a clitoral tear. I had never even heard of that before. I am now afraid of that.

But my biggest fear is just all the after-effects of labor. The blood, the leaking, the tearing, everything.

That was TOTALLY my fear during my first pregnancy - my water breaking in public. As it was...my water did break, but at home, and after getting everything ready and getting to the hospital, it was a full two hours later, and contractions were barely even there.  Just a little reassurance for you! Even if it does happen at work for you, Im sure you will make it there okay!

My fear for this one isnt really about birth, but I am scared that having another baby will change my relationship with my son.

I couldn't agree more. I so badly want to go into labor on my own, but I have a fear of going all the way to 42 weeks. My mom was late with both of her pregnancies and one pregnancy was with twins!!! Twins are never late. I guess my sister and I were just cozy in there.

My second fear is having a c-section. I don't want one at all and will avoid it all costs.

My biggest fears are preterm labor, tearing horribly, and not being able to breastfeed (I know that doesn't really have to do with labor).

I would think that a fear of your water breaking while in public is pretty normal.  I am a grad student so I know I will be pretty embarrassed if my water breaks during class.  I'm mostly just scared of everyone else's reaction.

If it makes you feel better I asked my SO a few weeks ago what his biggest fear about having a baby is and his answer was "putting a hat on the baby" because he is afraid he will hurt him.  Seriously.  The man installs pacemakers in people for a living but his biggest fear is putting a hat on the baby.  He has also told me that he is really worried about the baby getting sunburned later on.  I'm really not sure what goes through his head at times.

    Your husband is too funny!

  • My BIGGEST fear is obviously that something would be wrong with my baby.

Other than that, my biggest fear is delivering in the hospital, not my birth center (which would only happen if I became high risk or went past 42 weeks.) I worry that if I have to deliver in the hospital, I'd end up being induced, having an epi, or (yikes!) an unnecessary c-section, or something like that.

  • I guess mine would be having to be enduced. Or having my first contraction and it being the most unbearable pain I have ever expereinced. Knowing that early labor is the easy part, I think I'd totally freak.

  • My biggest pregnancy fear has been preterm labor.  My mom had 3 premature babies, my brother was at 32 weeks.  My sister went into labor twice at 24 weeks but it was caught in time & stopped.  Her kids are fine.  However despite my fears w/my family history, I am not being monitored for a short cervix.  So every pain scares me to death.  Everyday I just think it's going to happen to me.

For some reason, I don't fear anything about labor itself as long as it's on time - I have a high pain tolerance and I figure so many people do it a day.  I more or less just fear losing her.

  • Well all of your fears are now scaring the crap out of me!  I am really scared that I'll go into labor while I'm home alone and anyone who would help me would be at work, then they wouldn't get me to the hospital in time.

  • My biggest fear is something being wrong with the baby. My other big fear is that my husband will be at work when I go into labor and he won't make it in time. He works in Manhattan, which is an hour and a half drive from where we live. He usually takes the bus, but he's planning on driving in each day starting a month before my due date. Still I have a fear that there will be a huge traffic jam or something and it will take hours for him to get home, and he will either miss the birth, or I will be laboring alone for all that time! Hopefully I'll go into labor on a weekend!

Pretty much this. I'm also worried about having to have a c section. I have complete placenta previa and am praying that it will move before 36 weeks!

When I began pushing for DD#1, I was told that if you poop that's how you know your pushing correctly.  I actually asked the nurse to keep her fingers down there so I knew where to focus my pushing.  And even after pushing for 2.5 hours, I still never got it.  It's not anything you've ever done before.  I definitely knew that a (pooped) several times, but she just changed the pad under me every time.  It's no big deal, TRUST ME.  It's the last thing you'll be worried about.

As for the pain of labor/delivery, it's so different for everyone.  At my birth class, the nurse told me you truly don't know your tolerance of pain until labor/delivery of a baby.  And she's right.  It's not a pain like a paper cut, stubbing your toe, breaking a bone.  It's really different.  And for me, the labor wasn't what I expected.  In your 35+ weeks of pregnancy, you start to get real contractions from time to time.  So when my labor started I really had no idea.  It took me 9 hours to figure it out.  They had felt like contractions I had already been experiencing.

  • My first and foremost is certainly that something goes wrong with LO.

After that, tearing. I think 'tear' is one of the scariest words in the english language right now!

I'm also a little worried that there'll be a huge traffic jam on the way to the hospital. We're going to a hospital about 35-40 minutes away because the hospital in our town is an absolute joke. I'm going to be having conversations with LO in the weeks before that he is not allowed to try to come out between the hours of 6:45-8:30am and 4:30-5:45pm!

I know exactly what you mean.  When I was a student teacher at a school that's kind of in the middle of nowhere there were two pregnant teachers on staff.  One did go into labour early at school (she made it to the hospital fine and everything).  The other teacher decided to go on mat leave the next week, even though she was still over a month from her due date.  I'm a supply teacher at the moment and I don't think I'll take any jobs in September when school starts back up.  I'm too scared of what happens if I go into labour at a school far away where I don't really know the staff well, etc.

Since I fortunately won't be dealing with that fear, my others are mostly about the baby's well-being (preterm labour, distress, etc.) and the recovery after.  And a small part of me is scared I'm gonna turn out to be a total wuss over the pain. . .

  • Other than something being wrong with the baby, I suppose my only real fear is having some serious, crazy tear.  That and running out of energy during labor.
