NBR: WWYD birthday party/UT game

BF has a big birthday this year and I am going to do a surprise party but I need some help.  BF is a huge UT fan and goes to every home fb game.  His big birthday happens to fall on the day that UT is playing Baylor at Baylor.  The game will either start at 2:30 or 7:00 (not announced yet).  So my question is: when should I have the surprise party.  Should I throw the party the day of the game and just plan it around the game as a watching party? If I do that I'm risking that not many people will come becuase Baylor is so close and so many UT fans go to that game.  Should I throw it the following Saturday (which will most likely be the National Championship game)? Should I have it the Saturday before (no game but Thanksgiving weekend)? Or should I have it on a Friday night instead and just avoid football all together?  Do people go to surprise parties on Friday nights?

Re: NBR: WWYD birthday party/UT game

  • Since Baylor is so close, could you get him tickets to the game? Then invite your closest friends up to tailgate or something?
    Dear Bump: You suck.

  • Your BF and my Dad share a birth date!  (Day, not year, obvs!)  An excellent day to be born.

I'd do a Friday night party.  I think that would be your best opportunity to get a good crowd, and since it's the day before, everyone can ring in his actual birthday with him at midnight.  Plus, maybe it would be more of a surprise on the Friday night?

ETA: Oh, wait a minute.  I must have the date wrong, since the weekend before my Dad's birthday is not Thanksgiving.  Embarrassed  I could have sworn Baylor was playing on my Dad's bday!  Anyway, I'm sure you'll have an excellent party!

      Its Dec. 3rd this year.
  • I vote for a Friday night surprise party AND getting him tickets to the game the next day.  :)

I'm assuming you meant the Big 12 Championship game, since the National Championship is played in January. Since Nebraska and Colorado are leaving, there won't be a Big 12 Championship game this year.

ETA: So I'd either do Friday or if you think you can pull off acting like you didn't do much for him on his actual birthday, do it the next weekend.

    This is my vote too!

I wouldn't do the weekend before since Thanksgiving will make it hard to get party guests.

I also like the idea of ringing in his birthday at midnight.

LOVE this idea.  I went to the OU/Baylor game last year and it was awesome.  Close (and free!) parking, tons of OU fans, and most importantly, a win.  :-)  I imagine the UT/Baylor game will be much the same.

Do this.  If you can't get tickets, the George's tent across the street usually has TVs set up so you can watch the game.  Or I'm sure Crickets or the actual George's restaurant will be showing the game, too, and they serve plenty of beer and food.
