Success after IF

XP: Misoprostol?

Has anyone taken this?

My RE wanted me to get a laminaria placed before starting stims for my IVF cycle because it is so difficult getting anything through my cervix.  He wanted my cervix to be softened/a bit dilated so as not to encounter those issues during ET.

I asked my OBGYN yesterday, and he said he doesn't like using laminarias, and that for purposes like I was describing he prescribes a ONE-TIME-PILL (which sounds SO much nicer than having a flippin' matchstick of seaweed shoved up your hoo-ha) called misoprostol.  He said it can cause some GI issues, but that it's typically so much easier and less painful than the laminaria.

I have an email into my IVF nurse in CO, but I am so so so so hoping that the doctor says I can do this instead.  My MIL works at an OB's office, and she asked the doctors there and they said the same thing as my OBGYN...definitely go with the misoprostol.  I have a feeling, though, that if it was as easy as popping one pill my doctor would have told me to do that in the first place.  Huh?

Re: XP: Misoprostol?

  • misoprostol is used for inducing labor and also as an abortion drug, i believe...

i don't think that would be a good idea during ET!

  • Misoprostol is the generic name for Cytotec. I was offered it to potentially force my body to miscarry naturally instead of doing a D&C since I wasn't bleeding and the baby was still growing after it's heart stopped. I was given it after I had been released after my c-section because I had a ton of bleeding in order to cause my uterus to clamp down and shrink more. It made me feel very, very crampy and gave me really bad headaches.

  • Laminarias also have the same intended use (induce labor, abortion drug, etc.).

Basically the doctor wanted me to get the laminaria placed roughly two weeks before my tentatively scheduled ER/ET.  It's placed over night for roughly 24 hours, and the end result (for me) would be to have my cervix softened and dilated so that when the doctor is ready to do the procedure he won't have the same issues we had when he was trying to do the hysteroscopy.  (He had to dilate me himself with metal rods to get the scope in...an experience I don't want to go through again any time soon...)

My OBGYN here said he doesn't like using laminarias...they're painful, invasive, etc.  Misoprostol (cytotec) is commonly used for the same purpose.  It's actually used to treat ulcer patients as well.

Just wondered if anyone had used it for the same reason I am looking at it for.
