SLEEP

I'm sure there have been a million posts on this, but I am too tired to search or read through them.  Crying

MY KID WON'T SLEEP.  Well, that's not true -- he'll sleep, just on me.  We just stopped swaddling him (he was busting out of it and it was becoming unsafe, and we can't swaddle his legs tightly b/c he had hip dysplasia), so I know that's the issue.  He sleeps for about an hour at a time, then wake himself up, restless and fussing.

My questions are this:

(1). Any swaddle weaning tips (that don't include one arm in one arm out)?  Right now we have his little lamb seat in his crib which seemed to help, but last night at 2:30am he decided he hates that, too.  We cold-turkey stopped the swaddle 3 nights ago.

(2). Did you do Ferber/cry-it-out, and did it work?  I have Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, but can't seem to get into it.

He'll be 5 months on 7/1.

PS please don't tell me that you haven't had sleep problems with your baby or I'll start crying again Devil

Re: SLEEP

  • Was he sleeping before taking away the swaddle?  When we ditched the swaddle, we started using a Sleep Sack.

DD still sleeps in her sleep sack.  Arms are free but she is still in something.  She likes it.  I like that she has an extra layer to keep warm.  I know that a regular blanket would never stay on her at night.

I have the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child but I haven't read it either.  I really should since we are having issues with our naps now!

Hope you find something that works so you can get some better sleep! Smile

  • Month 4 was the worst sleep-wise.  The baby is just generally more alert/aware of his surroundings, wanting to roll over, you go through the 4 month wakeful, etc.  We ditched the swaddle and paci cold turkey and it was painful.  I think there was one night he woke up every 15 minutes.  He settled into getting up twice a night and then we did Ferber at 5 months (book says wait until 6) but it worked great for us.
  • will he sleep in a swing?  We had to do that with our DD at one point for a month Embarrassed

  • could you do a swaddle like a swaddle me or miracle blanket?  i know my DD is much younger, but she can't break out of either of those and then the legs are just in a sack (or you could leave them out completely) which might be ok for the hip problems?

for naps, will he sleep on his tummy (gasp!)?  that's the only way she'll sleep without being swaddled, and as long as I'm awake, I'm ok with it.  haven't ventured into letting her try it at night.

  • You are in the middle of a really hard month. My daugther did not want to sleep from 3.5 months to about a week ago.

3 days off the swaddle is still transitioning time. He may take a few more days to get used to sleeping without it.

My best advice is to keep reminding yourself that this is a phase, and some day it will be in the past and everyone will be getting more sleep! I'm sure others will have more specific sleep advice Smile

  • When DD was 5mos-12mos she slept terribly. At BEST she would sleep in 45min-1 hour stretches and that was only if she was swaddled, wrapped in my (or DH's) arms, or strapped into the carseat. We tried to ditch the swaddle a couple times prior to 13mos, but it just made things even worse. To this day she still prefers to be tight and snug in SOMETHING- she'll wrap herself up in blankets, towels, etc.

If he truly sleeps better swaddled, have you tried a Miracle Blanket? When DD got too long we just swaddled her arms and kept her feet out of the pocket altogether. You could also try a Woombie, but I'm not sure how snug it is on the hips.

When we finally weaned DD off the swaddle I used a sleep sack sewed shut. First I sewed it pretty snug on her arms, and when she was used to that I pulled out the stitching and sewed it a little looser. I think I sewed it 3 times, including just the armholes closed, before we were able to just put her in a sleep sack. It took probably a month, and you could use safety pins if you don't want to sew.

We never did any kind of sleep training, but she eventually got better on her own.

  • Thanks everyone!  We had been swaddling just the top of him in the Miracle Blanket, but Mr. Houdini squirms out of it in 4 seconds flat -- even when we do it TIGHT.  The Sleepsack seems to bug him too, and his issue is his arms scratching his face.  I worry about having his arms restrained if he can roll over -- like what if he rolls on his tummy in the middle of the night and can't get himself up to breathe?  I'm way to paranoid to have him sleep on his tum, although I have a feeling it would be the answer to my problems.

He had to sleep in a Pavlik harness because of his hip dysplasia for 2 months which he was just released from (HOORAY!) so I also think that he is just not used to sleeping without being restrained.

He WILL sleep in a swing, but the thing cuts off after 45 minutes which then wakes him up.  DO THE PEOPLE WHO DESIGN THESE CONTRAPTIONS NOT HAVE KIDS?!  I'd put 100 batteries in that thing every night if it meant it wouldn't stop going.

I appreciate all of the advice!  And yes, I realize I'm like debbie downer WAAH WAAAAH!!!! Surprise

They make swings that plug in.  Kate hated the swing (along with life in general), but you might check it out.

  • Go to a second hand store and pick up a swing that either plugs in or doesn't have an auto turn off
