Iron supplements?

Anyone on iron supplements? I found out today I am slightly anemic, not a big surprise because I have been in the past. Doctor wants me on 325 mg of iron supplement once a day. I went to pick some up tonight and could only find 45-65mg tablets.

So, if you're on iron supps, how many mg and where do you find them?

Re: Iron supplements?

  • My doctor put me on iron after it showed that I was boarderline anemic after my glucose test. Which is weird because I have never been anemic before. But she prescribed the 325 mg iron pills to take twice a day, along with 100 mg colace since iron can make you more constipated.

I would call and ask if they can prescribe them, since you dont have to take a couple pills a sitting.

  • My doc gave me a prescription.  It's 125mg.  If you can't find any in that high a dose, then call your doc and request a Rx.

  • I was prescribed 325 mg twice a day, even though she said my iron was only a *little* low.

  • Blah, I was hoping to avoid having yet another prescription co pay. The nurse said I could get them over the counter, maybe I'll have to call tomorrow and see where they recommend finding them or get them to write me a script. Glad to see I'm not the only one on such a high dose though - I was starting to get a little weirded out by only finding smalls doses and wondering if I had hear the nurse wrong.

  • I was anemic, too. My doc told me that I can take OTC iron supplements with my prenatal vitamin. I'm taking Slow-Fe. I have more energy now & am not craving ice like I did before :-)

  • I just looked at my "Nature Made" brand iron pills and it says "65 mg-Equivalent to 325 mg Ferrous Sulfate" and I take one every other day.   I had to stop taking them daily because they constipate me so bad.  I've been trying to eat more red meat and spinach (both high in iron) to supplement on my off days.

  • They told me I was borderline and to just take whatever I could find over the counter-- we decided to go the food route instead- lots of greens, etc- got back over the border :)

Thank you for this! I just assumed the mg listed were equal to the mg of iron - I'll have to read labels more closely next time. The nurse did warn me about the constipation, but I'm already eating spinach and red meat and am still anemic, so I'll have to risk it and hope fiber and colace do their job!

  • I'm taking an iron supplement, however I'm not sure how many mg is in one pill. The nurse just said to take an OTC iron supplement, but didn't instruct on how much I should be taking. I just bought mine at my local grocery store. They were on sale for about $2.50 a bottle.

If you can't find what you need, it's possible that your doctor could write you a prescription for your iron pills (if your insurance covers vitamins, etc).

  • the docs prescribe 325 mg of ferrous sulfate....of course they never consider that OTC is labels as mg of elemental iron!  I used to work at Whole Foods in the supplement department and always has people coming in thinking (rightly so cause the doc didn't clarify) they would have to take 5-6 regular iron pills to meet the recommendation.

anyway, here a link...you could probably google and find many more references to iron dosing as well.

  • I'm on Ferrose or however you spell it, once a day. My prenatal also has extra iron in it too though so I'm not sure how much I'm actually taking a day.

  • THIS exactly!!!  My nurse said to just find an iron supp. that read "325 mg ferrous sulfate"   On the bottle that I have it says "65mg iron (325mg ferrous sulfate)  So I would just call them and make sure you are taking the right amount!

  • I've had iron and B12 issues for the last 2 years. My specialist (that i waited a year to get in to see) said that the iron pill that my Dr had me on wasn't strong enough. He switched me to ProFerrin. The issue with the specialist, is that in the year that it took to get in to see him, i became pregnant. So, every issue that i told him i was having over the past year and a half, was obviously due to the "pregnancy" (insert sarcasm..i wasn't pregnant for a year and a half leading up to conception! ugh)

I have a midwife and they've been monitoring my iron levels and since my last test was low (since my last one 4 months ago) i now have to continue with my pills (which i had to switch again) 1x a day, as well i now have to have Vital-F oral liquid suppliments 3x a day - i do NOT like the taste, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

    Hope everyone feels better!

  • My doc had me on perscription at first, but it made me sick, so she now has me on SlowFE, an over the counter option. It is 265mg and slow release formula.

I forgot to say that I found it at RiteAid. There was also a generic version for only 9 bucks.
