Who came up with this smash cake thing?

it seems weird and I certainly never had one.....plus it seems like a lot of the kiddos hate it anyway so why force them? I'm not trying to be snooty....I am wondering why this is all the rage now and who came up with the fad.....

  • I don't know who came up with it, but I think people like doing it because it makes for cute photos. Times have changed from when we were all kids, that's for sure. :-) If you don't like it, don't do it. Simple as that!!

  • I think kids have been offered a piece of birthday cake at their first birthday for a really long time...as long as there has been special birthday treats/cake.  Someone probably thought hey, wouldn't it be great if they had their very own complete cake that was just for them and looked nice in photos and they could mess up and a "thing" was born.  My niece is 10, she had a smash cake.   My mom's godson is in his 20s and he had one, I remember it at his party.  And fwiw, both of them loved their smash cakes, just so happened my daughter did not.

  • It's been a tradition as long as I've ever known... My almost fifty year old siblings had them.
  • Maybe it is more regional. While it is certainly done here, it is not super common. I had never heard of it until I ordered Nolan's birthday cake when he turned one.

I am not a huge fan of it. Kind of awkward to have my kid on display like that, but whatever! I only got them because there was no extra charge at our bakery when ordering a cake for a first birthday.

  • It's been a tradition as long as I can remember. Matt loved his smash cake so I'm really glad we kept with the tradition.

I've kind of wondered the same thing!  I'd never heard of it until coming on The Bump.  Maybe it's just not a big thing in my area but it's not something I ever did growing up and I've never been to a party with one either (when I was a kid or now as a mom to a kid!).  It's not personally my thing so we didn't do one for my older daughter and I don't think we'll do it for my younger one either.

  • It is always cute to see a little one dive into their birthday cake...so much so that my great grandmother pushed my baby brother's hands into his big cake, just because she wanted to see him have fun and be covered in icing.  It was pretty adorable.

We did a smash cake for her photo shoot, but at her party, I just cut her a piece of her big cake and let her play in it/eat it.

It didn't seem remotely wierd to us...we had fun with it, but if you don't want to do it, there's certainly no reason you have to.

  • The regional thing makes sense - i lived in ny/nj as a child and since then fl and ma and never heard of it till on the bump.

This. I had one in 1977. If you dont like it, don't do it.

I had one in 1982. Everyone expected it at their birthday party, so it seems pretty common here. Every first birthday I've been to has had one and all the kids loved them.
