Medela PISA-would you buy on CL?

And buy new tubing?

There's one listed for $35, new tubing isn't expensive at all. I know NOTHING about pumps, all I know is this one is very highly recommended by friends.

I sent the lady an email, trying to see if it's still available.

  • Nevermind, FDA classified it as a single user pump :(

  • I wouldn't buy a used pump unless it was from a close family member or friend and you know how much use it got and that they never had any illness. I believe the recomendation is not to buy a used pump unless it is a closed systema and I know the PISA isn't a closed system.

I got one from my sister who only breastfed for 2 weeks so it was barely used but after pumping 2 times a day for 18 months with DD I think I need a new pump because it was begining to loose suction.

I'm probably going to do this. (Darn you for seeing the cheap one first!)  :)

I borrowed my SIL's PISA last time, but now she's selling it (for $150)...so I'm going to buy one cheaper from someone else that lives closer - probably on CL. I know the manufacturer says not to get used ones, but seriously - it's just an air pump. There is not really any way for the actual pump part to get contaminated I don't think. I'm going to buy one used and buy new tubing & flanges & valves. I loved the PISA.

[ETA: Ok, so now I'm reading more stuff online and people are saying it is possible for milk to back up into the pump and get into some kind of membrane in there. So I'll probably either try to get my SIL to sell hers to me cheaper, or try to find someone I know - and know they don't have HIV or hep - to buy one from.]

From what I'm reading, the milk can back up into the pump itself since it's an open system. Ugh. Don't know what to do.

I believe the Ameda is a closed system pump.  So, if you can find one of those used or cheap it should be safe to use.  HTH!

  • I wouldn't buy any pump till you find out if you are actually going to be a hard core pumper. That's an expensive item to buy to not use. I pumped during work w/ my first (worked full time from 6 weeks on) and just used a handheld pump that cost $30. It got the job done in less than 15 minutes and I used it for a year.

ETA: quote from the FDA: "The money you may save by buying a used pump is not worth the health risks to you or your baby. Breast pumps that are reused by different mothers can carry infectious diseases, such as HIV4 or hepatitis5."
