breakfast ideas for 22 month olds

I am seriously about to start skipping breakfast altogether and just go straight to an AM snack!  It seems no matter what I put in front of them, they eat at most 3 bites and are "all done!"

THEN, about an hour later, they are crabby and cranky because they're hungry.

I've already tried pushing breakfast back, but it's the same thing.  Few bites (and usually they're melting down while I'm fixing it because they've passed from grumbly stomachs to super hungry since I tried to wait till later).

This becomes a larger problem when I want to do something in the morning where their snack will be on the run and they won't eat as much.  (zoo, Sea World, etc.)

I want to try giving them more options for breakfast though, so what do your toddlers eat?

Things I do so far (in some combination usually with a "dip" like peanut butter or something):

waffles, pancakes, mini bagels, eggs, sausage, milk and cereal, oatmeal, toast, fruit, yogurt...

Seems like I've exhausted all the breakfast options, but maybe you ladies have some ideas!!

  • We do all those things too, but have you considered smoothies? Yogurt, fruit, PB, flax, kefir - the possibilities are endless! they don't even have to sit down to drink them and they still get a filling, nutrient packed breakfast.

  • During the week G basically gets a snack...she "drinks" a fruit (or veggie) pouch once she wakes up-- she literally runs to the pantry and gets it each morning.  Then on the way to work she eats cheerios or a rice cake. Sometimes she'll have a nutrigrain bar too, I try to limit those though.

On the weekends she usually eats an egg and sausage and fruit (we usually go out but not always) and she loves eggs so there is no issue-- but timing is important.  Like you said, it can't be too early but it can't be too late either. The other day DH was home with her waiting for a worker to come to the house and asked if she wanted an egg and she said no so he asked if she wanted a yogurt (chobani mango, she LOVES it) and she ran right to her chair.

For afternoon snacks we usually do a yogurt smoothie, which she loves or string cheese.

Those are all my ideas.  I really *try* to not let her just eat a carb fest for breakfast.  I like to make the bulk of her meals protein.

  • This morning for breakfast DS had roasted carrots leftover from dinner last night and some puffs.  That was it.  At least he ate, so that's better than many days!

I made him peanut butter bread, which he flat out refused, so I just grabbed the first thing I saw in the fridge that was "ready to serve"!

You might not be on board with this, but I personally try to remember that breakfast doesn't have to be "breakfast foods," so I just go for what I think he likes (which changes daily anyway).  I myself am not a huge fan of "breakfast foods", anyway, and things like cereal just don't stick with me all day.  I made it through law school having half of a cheese sandwich or peanut butter sandwich for breakfast every morning :)

  • My 22 month olds have made me crazy with meal time.  They used to be such great eaters until 6 months ago.  Now it depends on the day and their mood to determine what and how much they will eat.  I would cringe at every meal but one day I decided to sit on the kitchen floor and have a picnic for breakfast.  Sometimes for lunch we will eat on the porch and so on.  I don't know why.  But they always eat better out of their highchairs.  Now, I try to do 1 or 2 meals outside of their highchairs a day and it's a lot easier.  I just have to make sure I give them something that isn't messy.  Or if I'm feeding them something that is, like applesauce, I will feed it to them and in between bites I will tell them to dance in order to keep their mind off of wanting to feed themselves.  I also second the smoothie idea.  Mine love them.  I get a big pack of smoothie mixes (berries and yogurt already together) from Costco so all you have to do is add milk and blend.  I make homemade ones too but these are so quick and easy. These can be put in a sippy cup and eaten outside!

This probably isn't a perfect answer but it has helped my sanity so I'm passing it on :)
