Babies on the Brain

If you shop Etsy, help me out.

I'm contemplating opening an Etsy or Facebook shop for hand-knit/crocheted baby items.  Currently I make knit blankets for friends/family and I'm pretty darn good at it, if I say so myself.  But I'm not sure how that would translate as far as an actual money making business.  I'm pretty sure I can teach myself to crochet pretty easily, which would open a new avenue of products.

Would you buy (and if so, what would you pay for)

- A knit baby blanket (stroller size, approx 36"x42")

- A crocheted baptismal outfit

- Knit baby sweater

- Knit hat

Any other ideas you would be interested in?  Do you think this stuff is too overdone by people?

  • I knit and crochet too, but I can't help too much in the pricing.  I am doing a craft fair in July and I am having trouble with the pricing.  Sometimes I think I am charging too much sometimes I think I am not charging enough.

I say you have to take both the cost of the yarn and your time into account.   Try searching etsy for items similar to what you will sell and see what the average price is and go from there.  Etsy's success email suggest setting your price high and if it doesn't sell right away lower it and put "sale" in the product description.

You may not make tons of money selling your stuff but if you enjoy it that is the main thing, I have yet to sell anything I have made but I still really love doing it.

  • That's what I'm thinking - it really is something I enjoy and if I can make a bit of pocket change, then all the better.

DH thinks I can sell a baby blanket for $100.  While that may be representative of the time I put into it (blankets take a lot longer), I have a hard time believing someone would pay that much for it.

  • I have seen crocheted and knitted blankets for around $75 dollars, so $100 isn't totally unreasonable.  I wouldn't pay that much because I could do it myself, but my mother who couldn't knit, crochet, or sew if her life depended on it would pay that much if it meant she didn't have to do it.

Interesting.  I guess I will have to do more research!

  • I would price the christening gown at at least $100.  People buy well-made hand-made things like that all the time with the intention of it becoming an heirloom type thing.
