swaddle question

Are you supposed to stop swaddling when they roll back to belly? Trevor just did it twice and was kind of stuck there with his face smashed into the matress. I took him out and put him in a sleep sack but I am pretty sure he is never going to sleep without that swaddle..ugh.

Re: swaddle question

  • Liam is nearly 10 months old and I swaddle him simply so he wont stand up and scream because he can't get back down.  He stays put in his crib and sleeps through the night.  He rolls all around, but he doesn't wake up.

(I should add that I don't know if you SHOULD unswaddle the babies, and I may put a little too much faith in my heart rate baby monitor.  But man, I missed sleeping through the night before we started to swaddle again.  My MOTY around should be here any day....)

  • as far as i know, yes. but you could try swaddling with the arms out of the swaddle....

  • We did one arm out then the other, and then sleep sacks.  First night (after each change) was a little rocky if I remember correctly, but after that it went smoothly.

  • With Gavin, we swaddled him for at least 8 mos... maybe more- I can't remember.  He just needed that snuggled feeling.  And yes, he was definitely rolling in it.  He could turn his head to the side though, so I didn't worry too much.  We stopped swaddling Sophie about a month ago but honestly, I'm thinking about getting it back out b/c she hasn't been sleeping so well, and I wonder if she needs it again.  My pedi told me that there is no rush to unswaddle... some babies just prefer that security and others don't.  So as long as he doesn't get stuck face down in the mattress, I would keep it up.  Oh, and see if you put him on his side if he will stay that way.  Sophie is a side sleeper- if I put her on her back, she will roll on her tummy but if I put her on her side, she'll usually stay like that.

  • Thanks ladies! Cadence was a swaddle hater and escaped at 6 weeks old so this is new territory for me.

I put him back in with one arm out..thanks allycat!..in the middle of the night and that helped some. He is napping that way now.

Slw- I might try him on his side tonight and see if that works.

  • Ditto pp. We also swaddled Derek forever it seemed like. Definitely after he could roll over. He wouldn't sleep well at all without it. Once we did think it'd be ok without it, we did like ally did and did one body part at a time every few days until he was sleeping without it.
