Breastfeeding

When to pump

I just bought my Medela pump and I want to start pumping, to build a freezer stash and to have DH help with feedings on weekend nights. BFing is well established now that LO is 5 weeks old. My question is when do I pump, how long after feeding him. He eats on demand anywhere from every hour to 2.5 hours when he sleeps. It feels like my nipple is always in his mouth so I'm wondering when will I have time to pump. Any suggestions? TIA

Re: When to pump

  • I wonder about this too, and if ds only nurses one side do I pump both or just side he didn't nurse from?  Also how does this affect my supply/engorgement/overactive let down?

  • I asked my sister the same question, when I started BFing.  She said to pump after you shower, supposedly your milk ducts open up a bit more.

I usually timed it so it was right after a shower and about 45 min-hour after I last fed my baby.  Hope this helps.

  • What kind of pump did you get? I pump at a few times...

    1. I work part-time and my boss ok'd a 30 minute break each day for me to pump. So you could try sneaking away (if you can) for even 10 minutes.

    2. My daughter is starting to sleep longer at night so I either pump at least once at night, if I can wake up, when she used to get up or I wait until the morning and try pumping after I've breastfed her.

    3. After I shower sometimes.

    4. I breastfeed on one side at a time during the day, usually, and will wait 10-15 at most afterwards to pump the other side.

My LC in the hospital suggested I could try pumping 15-30 minutes after I breastfeed, even if you don't pump much of anything, to signal your breasts to start producing more milk so eventually you'll be able to pump more. :)

    HTH!

  • If you are pumping to build a stash, pump when ever you feel full, for example when baby is taking a long nap, or if you get up early or in the middle of the night.  Also, when ever someone is giving a bottle, you should use that oportunity to pump.

  • My nipple was always in DD's mouth when I was on maternity leave and it seems like it still is always in her mouth whenever we are at home and probably will be that way for a long time, haha.  Anyway, there was usually a time each morning where I would nurse her in the morning in the bed (side-lying) and she would fall back asleep.  That's when I could count on a pumping opportunity.  My stash is by no means large but I have small stash for my needs: A babysitter or some unforseen circumstance where I'm not around and DD would need to be fed.

You could try pumping on one side while LO eats from the other but that is easier said than done, IMO, lol.  I'm not coordinated enough, apparently.
