1st Trimester

Toothache

I may have to x-post this on 2nd and 3rd tri but I was curious if anyone here had dental x-rays and dental work during their first tri? I have a horrendous toothache (it's actually the reason I tested at 12dpo instead of my usual 14) and I know I need a root canal (I had x-rays many, many years ago).  I know the dentist is going to want to take new ones- I don't care about the dental work so much (my DH promised he'd go with me) but I don't really want to expose this tiny bean to the radiation so soon into the pregnancy.  Has anyone done this?  Should I wait until second tri?

Re: Toothache

  • From what I have read on the boards over the last few months, it's not reccommended to have dental work done in the first tri. I believe someone had said there is a pain med that is safe during procedures at the dentist...but you have to wait till the second. Also while doing xrays, as long as they know you are pregnant, they use a special kind? The best thing to do is call your dentist and ask. I hope you feel better! Congrats on your BFP btw!

I had really swollen gums for about a week and finally went to the dentist. I got 2 xrays on the side that was bothering me and they put a back and front vest on me. I don't believe the radiation can go through the lead. I went because I'd rather get an xray and rule out possible infection (which IMO is much worse than getting an xray done) Turns out nothing was infected and I have no cavities. Now, the swelling went down but the same tooth is achy. It's annoying but Tylenol helps and being reassured by my dentist that the pain/swelling was strictly from being pregnant helped my anxiety! If you're feeling that bad I'd say do it. Oh and some places can do a digital xray or w.e it's called which has less radiation than the old fashion way, I had the old fashioned xrays done. HTH!

  • I've had some really bad toothaches since being pregnant too.  I went in to get x-rays done at 8 or 9w.  I was told I needed to have my wisdom tooth and another tooth out because my wisdom tooth is so impacted its inside my other tooth Sad.  Anyway, when I went in to get it done the oral surgeon said he wanted to wait until my 2nd tri to do it, and if I could wait until after the baby is born.  I'm hoping to wait until after the baby is here.  Either way if they put the aprons on you (which they should no matter if your pregnant or not) then you and your bean will be fine.  GL!!!

  • I was an x-ray tech before DS was born.  They will use a lead apron and since they are x-raying your mouth, the baby would get very little actual exposure.  Most consider the pros outweigh risks.  I personally refused dental xrays when I was pregnant with DS.  Also it doesn't matter if the system is film or digital, if the tech doesn't use proper techniques.  If someone doesn't know what they are doing then they could use a lot more technique (more radiation) than required.  Also some digital systems like CR actually use more technique than film systems.  I would call my OB and go from there.  I will probably say no if I need some this time.  However that is just my opinion.  Good Luck!

  • I needed dental work done at 6 weeks at they did do 1 set of xrays. I was told that they wouldn't do elective xrays but that in a case where it was very painful or risking an infection that it would be more likely to cause harm than the xrays. Talk to your Dr. and Dentist, but I think it should be fine!

  • Thanks everyone.  Once I know the viability of this bean I'll be chatting with the RE/Ob about it and see what they suggest.
