Smash cake

Did you order it or make it?

I am taking Jack for pictures a few days before his birthday and am debating what to do. I googled to find pictures and get some ideas, but it seems a lot of them are made with fondant. Doesn't it make more sense to use whip cream? I figure it makes for a bigger mess, and is tastier.

If you have pictures of your smash cake can I see them?

Re: Smash cake

  • you can check Flickr for some ("smashcake") but I've seen a LOT of the local grocery stores starting to carry small cakes for like $7, that's what I use. I just go during late morning when I know the bakery ladies can plop some extra bright frosting on them or something to jazz them up.

I wouldn't use fondant unless you plan on having some soft cream stuff on there too to make a mess off. Keep in mind, also, that most kids don't like to get messy at that age.  I've rarely had a kid "go for it", untill we smeared it on them, acted like idiots, and got the shot that was microseconds before they melted down. lol.

I find white cake looks better, and just a diaper cover - I usually have a stash of the little covers from under dresses. And have towels and washcloths standing by!

  • Ditto all DW says.  We bought ours from the grocery (actually a larger than usual cupcake that I took the cupcake wrapper off of) with very bright icing and while DD actually hated it all it looked awesome.  We also got a small fiestaware type cake stand so it looked cute before it got smashed and ignored.

  • I ordered one, the icing was too hard, DD was confused, she didn't like getting dirty (so I really appreciated reading Davez reply) and it wasn't until DH smeared her that we got a decent picture and even then she was like 'get this stuff off me'.  Get store bought, get soft icing and don't have expectations.  Oh, we did bring DD out to the yard after on her sprinkler toy and THAT she loved.  So at least we have fun pics of that!
  • We just gave DD a jumbo cupcake (homemade). I didn't really want her eating too much and getting sick since it was her first time with sweets. We just did pics in her highchair on her bday. She was very dainty and didn't make a mess at all but the pictures were still really cute. Funny thing, about a week or two later we went to a bday party and I thought I'd let her have a few bites of cupcake. Well she went crazy on the thing , icing everywhere (of course she was wearing a white shirt and the icing was green). It made me think though that the first time they're just unfamiliar with it the first time and more hesitant but once they know what it is and have tasted it they're more likely to want it and dig in the second time around.

  • We just got a cupcake for 1st bday pictures.  Lots of fluffy icing but you're not breaking the bank to buy it.
