3 Day Potty Training Questions

Today (day 1) has sucked and I am sooo exhausted.  I am already going stir crazy and really want to get out of the house but am going to stick it out.  I am still unsure if Ethan is ready for this.  I am in no rush to potty train but at the same time feel like if he's ready I want to go for it and not wait too long to start.  I felt like we hardly made any progress today but I know the book says that may happen and to stick with it.  The main problem is that I cannot get him to the potty in time when I see him starting to pee.  Even if I'm right there, by the time I run him in to the bathroom he is done.  Did this happen to anyone else?  As a result he's not at least finishing in the potty and then getting the treat.

My other question is how many of you were able to train both day and night at the same time?  This seems like a lot.  I put him down for nap in underwear today and he woke up way earlier than usual because he had soaked his bed.  I am wondering if we should just put on pullups at night.  From what I have heard, it seems like more kids are day trained for awhile and get the night down later.

Re: 3 Day Potty Training Questions

  • Hang in there!  I felt the same way at the end of Day 1.  He got it late in the day on Day 2... funnily enough when I left the house for my break.  I think me leaving actually prompted him to get it.  Maybe the pressure was off?  Even though I was sure NOT to pressure him, maybe he just felt more comfortable with DH... or maybe that's just when it finally clicked.  Who knows.  If you think DH will stick to it and follow the rules- GO.  I wouldn't have finished it out if I hadn't been able to leave and clear my head.  That is the one part of that book that I disagree with- I don't think only one parent should do this.  We had to talk each other through it many times b/c we both were ready to give up more than once.  That was the most intense day and half of our lives!  And as for bedtime, give it a shot.  Double sheet the bed and go for it.  If he wakes up wet during the night, put on a pull up and just deal with that part later.  Gavin surprised us and bedtime was never the big issue.  He has only ever wet the bed when he was ill (like this week!).  Not sure why there is that connection for him, but sure enough, his bladder control fails when there is any kind of illness going on.  And no, we rarely made it to the potty in time either.  But it was just that repitition that finally sunk in and he made the connection.  Anyway, keep it up mama, he will get it.

  • My experience was pretty easy, she had one accident that whole 3 days and only one accident since. But one thing I did that was really effective was I had a chart. She got to put a sticker on her chart for peepee and poopy, but she got a frowny face for accidents. That one frowny face was so effective. She would tell anyone she saw that she was "sad because she peepee'd in her panties" Then show them the frowny face. It was good because she got to actually see her progress and she'd get really excited.

Do you have a portable kiddie potty?  If so, I would drag that around to whatever room in the house y'all are in!  He's going have to make the connection of putting the pee in the potty before I think you'll see results.  And even if it is just 1 drop, I would reward him and tell him to try to get more next time.  I saw a dramatic improvement from day 1 to day 2.  I'm talking like 30 accidents vs. 2.

Also, I did not do pullups at nap time until she stopped holding her poops.  It was hell for 2 days and then no big deal bc after the 2nd day she would willingly go potty before nap time and wake up dry.
  • Oh yeah, regarding naps and bedtime:

The first day, Abigail didn't want to wear a pullup at naptime. I was so nervous, but I let her wear panties. And she didn't have an accident! I kept her in pullups for bedtime for few days until she flat out refused. She's amazed me how good she's done. No accidents! But naptime is usually when she goes poopy, so I stay close by until she falls asleep at naptime in case she says she has to go poopy (almost everyday so far!).

Abigail would wake up dry about 80% of the time even before I did the 3day potty training. So, maybe that's why it was so easy for me.

Another thing, when she has a peepee accident, I make her clean up the mess (of course I go back behind her since I can't expect much from a 2 year old cleaning).

Ditto this. We did this when we were PTing and we still have a little potty that sits in our family room if she needs to go quick.  Also, have you tried putting him on the potty at regular time intervals ie: every 45 mins - 1 hour to start with and then build up if needed?  Maybe you could catch him before he needs to go and he will go in the potty and start to pick up on it and build up confidence. Rewards are key.  Also, when we started we did pullups for nap and nighttime. I was not messing with her sleep!! Then a few weeks later she refused them at that was that. Good luck!

  • Hang in there mama, the first day is the hardest!!  I also used a rewards chart and it help a lot.  Oh and yes, I just concentrated on peeing in the potty during the day and didn't deal with the nap or bedtime.  I did just put him in pull-ups for both.  Nap time kind of took care of itself on its own because he stopped taking naps and we're finally about to get rid of the pull-ups for bedtime because he's been dry in the morning for 8 days in a row.

And, it took him a while to get the hang of the poop issue.  He would just poop in his pull-up during nap or right after he went to bed and so we had to change him.  He was scared to poop on the potty so I didn't push it except to put him on the potty every so often and let him know it was ok.  He didn't poop on the potty until about 4 or 5 months after he was pee potty-trained but once he did it, we haven't looked back.
