Versions for breech presentation

holly321holly321 member

Not sure this is the best board, but I figured it was close since breech is a big cause of c sections.

Do you think it is standard practice to not perform a version on a first time mother? An aquaintance's ob wouldn't do one because it was her first child.  I had never heard this before.

Re: Versions for breech presentation

  • I hadn't heard of that before.  They attempted version for me with my son, and he was my first pregnancy.

  • My doctors told me I could have had a version but I chose not to.  It was my first baby.

  • I have heard that they are more successful if it's not your first, so it doesn't really surprise me.
  • I had a successful version with my daughter and she was my first.
  • I had a version at 38 weeks with DS#1 and he was my first.  Unfortunately he did not like the procedure and his heart rate dropped rapidly and I had an emergency c-section.  He and I were both fine and healthy and I am still glad I tried it.

  • I have 2 friends who's first baby was breech and they both had versions.  One worked to turn the baby and the other didn't.

  • DS1 turned breech 5 days before my due date. My OB said that the chances of a version being successful were slim because I was 39+ weeks and a 1st time mom. He said the stomach is just not as stretchy. In all honesty, I wish I would have tries the version, I was just so stunned that he was breech so late.
  • I've never heard that reasoning. But I do think there's conflict among professionals about the best time to do a version, and/or how many of them are willing to actually do it.

DD2 was breech and we were scheduled for a version the day I hit 39 weeks. My OB preferred to do them then, when LO is definitely full-term, because of the possibility of a version or version attempt sending me into labor. I've heard/read that other docs will try earlier b/c supposedly it's easier, since the baby is smaller.

I'm fine with my OB's reasoning and in fact preferred to wait as long as possible for the version, hoping she'd flip on her own -- but in the end, we never got a chance to try b/c my water broke two days before the version attempt, so a c/s it was.

  • i was offered a version with my son ... it was my first.

due to a whole bunch of reasons, i chose not to go there ... but i don't think it's standard practice to NOT offer a version to a first time mom.

Now that I know DD was breech, I know when she flipped, it was 10 days before I had her.  I just didn't think much of the stomach achiness that day, I didn't realize that babies who were heads down would go back to breech.

Jack turned breech while I was at my 39 week appointment. He was trying to avoid the Doppler! Wound up getting himself breech instead. He was so small (5lbs 12 oz) I never felt it (when my OB did my internal he said he didn't feel a head) until I sat up and his head was in my ribs. His size us also the reason he was able to turn and if I had done the version, he likely would have flipped. Of course at that time they though DS was almost 8lbs.
  • DD was 5 lbs 15 oz. I didnt so much feel the flip, as see the similarities of when she went heads down to begin with.  And then I kept feeling her head under my ribs and assumed it was her butt.  I just assumed she was running out of room. I feel bad for patting her head the last week of my pregnancy.
  • I had a version for DD.  Dr. said it was up to me.  He said he has a high success rate but since my daughter was measuring big he wasn't optomistic.  It didn't work and hurt a whole lot.  But he never said anything about it being my first.
