"Play" pre-school vs. Montessori

Thoughts? I'd love to hear them.
I think DS is going to go to a program that's twice a week this fall/ next spring.  He turns 2 in Oct and the school I am looking at is from 9am-12pm. It's a pre-school that is a hybrid between play and learning.  I know Montessori is typically 5 days a week, and I'm thinking he might be too young for that... but maybe not.  Any input is welcome! DS misses the cut off for most traditional pre-schools by 12 days (the cut off in our area is September 30 and he's Oct 12th) so I have to think outside the box a bit.

Re: "Play" pre-school vs. Montessori

  • Tons of LOs have been going to daycare FT since they were weeks old so I really don't think it's about being too young.  I think it's more up to what you think DS is ready for.  If you have the option to send him to a PT school and you don't think he's capable of handling more than a couple days than do that.  This coming Fall DD will be attending a Montessori daycare/preschool FT since I'm going back to work FT.  Unfortunately we don't have a choice but for her to go 5 days a week for almost 8 hours  each day.

I purposely chose Montessori because I like their philosophy and when done correctly it reaps many rewards.  Montessori, although somewhat more structured, still involves play into it's learning.  So if you think  your DS can handle 5 days and you do like the philosophy then give it a try.

  • DD goes to a Montessori approach daycare.  We love it.  She goes full-time during the school year, & part-time during the summers.  Everything is age appropriate so being too young isn't a concern.  Recently, she was moved to the 2 & 3 year old classroom.  Her teachers differentiate to meet her needs & communicate to the parents pretty well.

  • E goes FT M-F, 8-4, to a Montessori type school and she loves it. Yes they learn letters, numbers, colors, etc but they also have lots of free & structured play. They are having mud week next week, they went to the zoo a few weeks ago, and have music & gymnastics 1-2 times a month. She comes home exhausted and singing new songs. She is the youngest in her class, but all the kids help her and she loves to play & follow them all day long.
  • Our boys are in a Montessori, and we love it.  Like PP said, I know there are some that are much more structured, but ours seems to have a good blend that works for our family.  They do all the Montessori works, but circle time is not limited to learning the works.  They also have stories, songs, etc.  In addition to recess time, they are outside often either in their garden, looking for bugs, in the gazebo, etc.  They have a music class weekly, just added weekly Spanish, and have various extra curricular classes/sports we can sign up for after school (my kids are in the before/after school programs too because of work.  Those times are not Montessori-oriented at all).  Honestly, it has been so good for them and I really love it!!

Because of our jobs, they are in there 5 days a week, so I can't help with that part of your question, though.  I can tell you that our school has 2, 3, and 5 day a week programs as well as half days and full days.
