Help 5 week old baby boy keeps leaking through his diaper

We are using the kirkland brand of diapers and never had an issue until yesterday.  He keeps getting his clothes wet and we had to change his outfit 6 times.  Any tips on what i can do to prevent this?

I should add that he isn't leaking through his legs it's coming out from the top by his belly button!

This and make sure that his pen!s is pointing down towards the middle of his diaper. If it is off to the side, that can cause leaks.

    ETA: He's gorgeous btw!

I've never gone by weight it's more about the shape of your baby and the diaper. I've never used Kirkland brand but I've heard they are similar to Huggies, and when T was a new born he would leak horribly with huggies.  I would try up a size, or change brands.  We've used Luvs since birth and rarely have leaks, and I get 150 diapers for $23 on Amazon.

  • I don't know what it is about the newborn (0-3) stage but my little guy leaked all the time too. I ended up putting one of these Kushies wraps over his diaper each time and it solved all our problems - so at least we could go 2 hrs between changes.
  • Its possible that the diaper is too big!  I would try switching to size 2 swaddlers and see if it fixes the problem.  The kirkland diapers are pretty big, and I know I just went up to a size 3 with J and he immediately had leaks which we had not been dealing with before.

  • I thikn the Kirkland ones run big.  I would try Pampers.  Those worked best for us for newborn.   1-2 is a pretty big size for a newborn.

ALso, point that penis DOWN every time.

  • What others said - I had the best luck with Pampers until K got bigger, now the Kirkland ones work the best.

And we are always off the weight on the package for the most part - we just go by what actually fits her.  And if you do buy bigger, and they don't work, you're not out too much and you have some diapers waiting for when he's in that size later!

  • What pp said but more importantly....if he is leaking out the top: point the peeper down.  I always fasten one side, then reach in, slide the peeper down, and fasten the other side.

You can also try fleece shorts or a fleece soaker over them when you're around the house- or light fleece PJs ought to even help a little.  Soakers are especially good for hot days when you don't want much covering the baby (they breathe so he won't get hot), and they absorb pee nicely.  Then you just wash them with regular clothes.

    Something like this, maybe: https://www.etsy.com/listing/75697079/newborn-blue-dots-and-chocolate-fleece

  • We had the exact same issue and changed sizes recently (from newborn to size 1).  Pointing the penis down helps, too.  The size 1's are still too big in the butt, but they fit the leg gap much better and no leaks.

  • Do you put him in onesies most of the time? If the onesie is too tight it can lead to leaking. Try just a t-shirt or a larger onesie.
