Any experience with a Speech pathologist? Food issues

Our LO has had issues with eating solids and has understandably become behind developmentally with communication. We qualified for our state's early childhood intervention program and will start having a speech pathologist work with us weekly. She has provided us many tips to help him get used to food textures and learn to speak.

Does anyone have experience with this? Any success stories? I had no idea how much preemies can differ from full term babies. It truly is a long road.

Re: Any experience with a Speech pathologist? Food issues

  • We have a ton of experience with Speech therapy/feeding issues. My DS is 18 months old & has been in PT/OT/Speech/Feeding therapy since he was about 4 months old. Do you have any specific questions? He was born at 32 weeks & has just had a lot of trouble with feeding. He had severe reflux that was probably related to his multiple food allergies & this has given him kind of a love/hate relationship with food. He also had a feeding tube for the majority of his life & while he doesn't have one currently it still has impacted his feeding/speech development. Since we've been working with his therapists on a weekly basis we have seen a lot of improvement & he is actually starting to talk a little bit (he mostly signs) & make some new sounds. How early was your LO? What are the main issues with feeding currently? Just let me know how I can help!

  • My DD just started OT for her eating issues.  For her we've found that it is a sensory thing - she doesn't enjoy things like swinging, being dirty, certain textures etc.  Our concentration is teaching her to try things - she's down to eating about 6 items and lost 2 lbs at her 2 yr check up so we are keeping a close eye on it.  Patience, Trial and Error are the things that are working for us.  And use any help you get offered it makes a big difference.  My DD tried cantelope this week and its the first fruit she's put in her mouth since she's been on table food.
