Moving to Seattle area - kid friendly areas to live?

DH just accepted a job in Everett. We don't want to live in Everett. I have read that Mukilteo, Mill Creek and Bothel are good areas with good schools. Do you ladies here have any advice about kid friendly areas and neighborhoods (within very good school districts)? I have an almost 4yr old and a 2yr old. I am hopeful that we can make a house hunting trip out there and so am trying to determine best areas to focus.

Also, are some areas more convenient for groceries and errands and such? I would label myself as a "suburban-type" mom and am not used to specialty shops (not many of those in Arkansas!)

 Thanks much!

  • Lake Stevens or Snohomish are my suggestions.

    Good Luck on the move!

  • We live south of Seattle, but while house hunting, we really liked the Lake Forest Park area... not sure about the schools or shopping there though.

  • Also, greatschools.org is a nice resource when looking at school districts.

  • We live in Lake Stevens. Fabulous school districts, great sense of community, close to Everett.  I would highly recommend it!  It has new housing, older housing and everything in between.  The lake is great during the summer and the park at the lake is great too.

  • I live in Lake Stevens just east of Everett and we really like it here.

Also Snohomish is nice some great parks.

My DH is a realtor in the area if you need one he has lived here his whole life and knows the all of the areas you mentioned and basically all of snohomish county.

  • My first rec would be Bothell.  The Northshore school district is amazing, housing is reasonably priced, and it's not too far from anything - pretty easy shot to Everett, Seattle or the east side.  And there's definitely easy shopping, etc.  It's very suburban.
  • Honestly, we have an Everett mailing address in the Silver Lake area but it's actually unincorporated Snohomish county.  Just having an Everett address doesn't necessarily make it in the city.  The public schools get fine reviews from what we have read, and there are a number of private options too.  We love our neighborhood and find it convenient to lots of shopping and I-5.

  • We live in Edmonds just south of Mukilteo. The school districts are good here. There are very nice neighborhoods in both Edmonds and Mukilteo, you can't really go too wrong in either location.

Depending on how far into Mukilteo you go, that can take a little bit of time to get back to the freeway for errand running, but your husband could get into Everett without having to hit I-5.

Both Edmonds and Mukilteo are definitely suburban.

    Welcome!

  • We just moved to Lake Stevens from Mill Creek/South Everett and have liked both places. It depends a lot on what you can spend on a house, but Bothell is more $$ but nice and great schools. We liked Lake Stevens b/c we felt like we could get a lot for our money and its still close to everything. The nicer areas that we found in those areas when we were house shopping were mainly North Creek (Bothell area) and Silver Firs (Mill Creek/ South Everett)-- this is a huge development with tons of different sections, right next to schools. We checked out Snohomish but didnt love it, I guess it depends on what you are looking for. Mill Creek itself is nice too, and close to Everett.

I would check out a bunch online beforehand too, so you can get a feel for what the neighborhoods are like. I did a lot of searching using Google maps, where you can do a "street view" and actually see the house and neighborhood. Very cool.

    Good luck!

This. I grew up in Bothell. I also love Mukilteo (I live there now).

  • I grew up in Mukilteo, and still live here. We love it. Our neighborhood (Harbour Pointe) is awesome, there are parks, the schools are great and it's super easy access to Boeing and Everett. It's easy access to I-5, and there are a few grocery stores within a 5 minute drive.

We are moving to Silver Lake in August (which is technically Everett) but not in the city. I love it there too and have heard the schools are good, and has easy access to I-5. HTH!

  • Thank you so much for all the advice and feedback! I really appreciate it! I am learning that living "in" Everett does not necessarily mean living in the center of Everett. So I'll keep that in mind!

We are hoping t make a house hunting trip up there in the next few weeks! We are getting excited!

    Again, many thanks!
