Similac Sensitive vs Gerber Good Start

Has anyone used Gerber Good Start for their newborn? If so do you find that it works well for the baby? My 9 week old has been on similac sensitive and breast milk but suddenly isn't pooping as regularly as before so I'm thinking of switching to good start which claims to be most similar to breastmlk. Any advice?

Re: Similac Sensitive vs Gerber Good Start

  • What does your doctor say?

Babies do start pooping less as they use more of their food. A 9 week old is much more active than a brand new baby so they'll burn off some of the milk instead of pooping it all out. Poop is waste i.e. un-needed food.

ETA: My DS takes Similac Sensitive. Most times he poops once a day, sometimes once every other day. They're a normal consistency for an infant and he doesn't strain, so he's fine. Constipation is defined by the consistency of the poo and the effort to eliminate it, not how often it's done.

  • We are using Gerber good start and have had no problems.  My son is 3 weeks old and usually poops twice a day

  • If not pooping regularly is your only concern (and it's not days and constipation), I would just stick with the sensitive. Like pp said, they can stop pooping less. It doesn't mean there's a problem or that it's bad. DS is on Goodstart (soy) but was on sensitive and gerber gentle. The sensitive just made him gassier, but trapped gas and hard to burp/fart. The Good Start... whoa, watch out! He had the MOST vicious gas ever. The smell would literally gag you. He was letting out the loudest stinkiest farts all.day.long. It was embarrassing!

  • My doc says this is the time they develop their pooping schedules.. She doesn't see it as a big problem. She poops every 4 to 5days.... Isn't that a too long!

Eh, DS would do that from time to time right around the same age your DD. He wasn't straining at all and it was the normal consistency, so I think his system was just working itself out. He still has the occasional 3-4 day span in between but his doctor is only concerned if there's straining or pebble poop involved.

Odds are good that she'll level out in the next few weeks... or maybe she just won't be a big pooper. My step-mom only poops once a week (TMI on her part, but she's happy to share). That's just normal for her.

I recently switched my DD from Similac Sensitive to Gerber Good Start Gentle.  She was doing fine on the Similac Sensitive but I didn't care for the ingredients compared to the Good Start Gentle.  She switched with no problems and I love the Gerber.  If you're son can make the switch easily and your pedi doesn't have any issues with it, then I say it may be worth it.  I like the fact that the Good Start Gentle has Whey Proteins (which are easier to digest than the caseine) and the first two ingredients aren't corn syrup and sugar like the Similac.
