what do white people smell like?

All this talk about racism reminded me of a comment I heard years ago.  I remember hearing someone say that black people think white people smell like wet dog. I wasn't offended by the comment, but I did find it a little odd. And it has just kind of stuck with me.

Re: what do white people smell like?

  • That's pretty offensive! We each have our own smell.  How would you like it if I said blacks smelt like coco butter?

  • I've heard mayonnaise in addition to wet dog.  I have a bunch of white friends and I have never experienced this.  Maybe it's because (according to a few of my students) white people don't use washcloths.

Of course. I'm not saying that I think white people smell like wet dog, or that people of any race all smell like one particular thing. It just made me think of this off-the-wall comment I heard.  I really don't understand your comment about "blacks" and coco butter.

Why did you change your screen name to have the first and last names of you and your husband?

I doubt they smelt like coco butter. Smelled perhaps? Coco butter would be hard to smelt. Any lotion would be hard to separate the metals, really.

  • Am I the only person who thinks cocoa butter stinks? I bought some for my stretch marks when I was pregnant but could never use it because the smell made me sick.

They actually asked me that as a question in class.  It was, "Mrs. 825, why don't white people use washcloths?"  To which I responded, "When was the last time you had a shower with all white people?"  Then I informed them that using washcloths isn't race specific.  I told them that all people of all races use wash cloths if they want and if they don't, they don't.  It was still such a funny generalization.  I actually laughed before I could answer the question.

You aren't alone. I hate the smell of it, too. It's sickeningly sweet or something. I can't quite put my finger on it. I use it sometimes, because I had it left over from pregnancy. It's awesome, but the smell isn't.

I've always heard that white people smell like wet dogs, too...what an odd thing, lol.

Smelled or smelt are both correct past tense of smell.

I'm all about a loofa. I hate washcloths.

But I smell like a cow. Not really a wet one, just a cow. I'm okay with that.

You've taught me so much over the years Laverne, like how to place an IV without bruising, or how to get lab results back faster, or the fact that when white people come in out of the rain we smell like wet dog.  We do, we really do.

  • Yes, I think we smell like wet dog when wet.  And mayonnaise.

  • Everyone smells like what they eat, if it has a strong scent. Some people smell like garlic (that may be me, actually! LOL), some smell like curry.

I wish it were true for all food. I wouldn't mind smelling like chocolate. Yum.
