TTC After a Loss

Really confused, and maybe a little hopeful?

My D&C was 8 days ago, and up until this morning I am still having some bleeding. I was preparing myself for a looooong wait until first AF. I started getting ovulation-like cramps on my left side. I got curious and took two OPKs and 1 HPT and all three came out positive. A little depressed over the positive HPT, but confused about the OPKs. Has anyone else O'd just 8 days after their D&C? The m/c either happened that morning or the night before so we caught it very soon. Are there any hormones left over in your system after a m/c that would cause a positive OPK? I'm very confused by this. Should this make me hopeful that my body is rebounding magnificently after all of this, or should I still be cautious with my excitement? I plan on asking my doctor all these questions at my f/u appointment next Friday, but thought maybe you ladies could shed a little light on the subject. TIA! <3

Re: Really confused, and maybe a little hopeful?

  • It's very possible it's still the hormones related to pregnancy still in your body, especially if you're getting a + HPT as well.  The link below will take you to a more detailed description, but I C&P the 'reasoning' portion from the website below.  I have seen women on this board O on schedule after m/c & D&C so I wouldn't cross it off the list but I am not sure.  HTH and good luck :)

Reasoning-- OPK's detect LH (luteinizing hormone) which is the hormone associated with ovulation. Pregnancy tests detect hCG, the hormone associated with pregnancy. LH and hCG are, at a molecular level, nearly identical. hCG has a beta subunit, meaning it has an extra little "doodad." To use a stupid but easy to understand example, LH and hCG are identical twins, except that hCG wears a funny hat.

  • OPKs can be used as HPTs - not 100% reliable though. When you have HCG in your system, your OPK will be +.

With my trigger shot my OPKs have been the darkest that I've ever seen!!

Like the PP's already said, the leftover HCG that is still in your system will cause you to get positive OPK's.  According to my OB, you shouldn't ovulate until after your HCG gets below 5.  Since you got a positive HPT, your HCG levels are still well above that.  The pain you are feeling is probably just from your body expelling any stuff that's still in your uterus.

This.  You should have not been having sex anyway, I think the standard of waiting is at least a week, more like 2 weeks.

It took several weeks after my d&c for my levels to get to 0 again.  It's probably just left over from your loss, I'm sorry.

I don't think I'm pg. I just had a m/c 8 days ago. I more wondering if anyone knew if it was even possible to O so soon after miscarrying. The +HPT was just something I tried out of curiosity to see if my Hcg levels have dropped yet. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Not to rain on your parade but I had some remaining cramps every couple of days after my D&C. Nothing big but it just seemed like things were going on down there.  I didn't get my first AF until about 35 days after, but didn't really track down my HCG.  I did get a - test 2 weeks after in a random sample.  I agree with the PP about OPK/HCG being roughly the same results, I've heard that before as well.

Good luck!  I hope you get your body back on track soon.

  • Thanks for the input everyone! I knew it seemed too good to be true. The ovulation-like pains just struck me weird because I hadn't felt any like them since the m/c. I guess only time will tell what is truly going on with me, but your input means a lot!

It could be possible, but more than likely it's just the left over hcg turning your OPKs positive.

My guess is left over hormones.... And since your D&C was only 8 days ago, I would assume nothing has been in your whoha, because most Dr's say Nothing in there for 2 weeks...

No, I've been following doctor's orders! Nothing in there yet. Very frustrating for DH since I was bleeding for about 2 weeks before the m/c, so its been a while!

  • I think folks were thrown off with the hopeful part as though you were hopeful to be pregnant, and from what I read, you're just hopeful that your body is Oing and starting to get back to normal.  Which I am hopeful of for you too!  :)

That's exactly what I meant. Sorry if I was confusing. Sometimes I have a hard time explaining what I'm thinking. I just want to go back to normal so we can get this process started again. I didn't know that Hcg and LH are so similar, which makes perfect sense as to why my OPKs would be positive already. So I'm still hopeful that maybe my body will get back to normal soon, but I no long think that I am ovulating now. The ovulation like cramps I've had today threw me off, but it doesn't sound very probably that that's really what they are. Thanks for everyone's help, and sorry if I unintentionally offended anyone!

  • I'm hopeful for you that you are Oing also. Even though you can't take advantage of it, it might be a good sign that your body is getting back to normal. Unfortunately, I think it's probably just leftover hormones. I remember how funny it was to pee on an OPK when I was pregnant and see how dark it would instantly show up. It takes a while for those hormones to stop being released, and make their way out of our bodies. Lots of hugs.

  • I can offer a bit of insight here.  I did an OPK 2 weeks after my d&e and was overjoyed when it was positive.  DH, the genious that he is, decided to google to see if an OPK could be positive because of HCG.  Yup, it's true.  I've been alternating between HPTs and OPKs as I anxiously await for my levels to drop.  I haven't had blood drawn so I have NO idea where I stand.  Ugh!  Good luck to you!
