toddler toothbrushing/spitting

How did you teach your kid to spit the toothpaste?  My boys will spit but they swallow first and it is kinda like just doing raspberries into the sink.

When did you stop using the training paste and move to kids paste?

Re: toddler toothbrushing/spitting

  • I am still using training toothpaste (orajel toddler) because Jack swallows every bit of it.  We'll work on spitting when he's 3.  We tried switching to kids flouride toothpaste but he HATED it, and again, he was swallowing every drop and I didn't want that even though we were only using a very tiny bit.

    Wheee!

  • DD's gotten good at spitting, we switched around 4.  DS still swallows it all so I have both kinds of toothpaste around.

  • We tried the flouride kind but he would rather eat it than spit.  So we work on spitting non-flouride stuff.  :)

We use several different brands of kid's toothpaste but I make sure that it contains Xylitol.  It impedes the grown of bacteria and really does help minimize the teeth gunk and helps us keep our teeth clean. It is NOT in many common brands of kid's flouride free toothpaste for some reason.  Earth's Best has it, though I think most Orajel flavors do not.  I buy our's at Whole Foods.
