Moms of 1+ - has your child had tubes in ears?

Hi Girls. Next Thurs my son is getting tubes put in his ears, due to residual fluid in his ears and many recurrent ear infections (he's had about 7 since he was born, and we've been on 5-6 rounds of antibiotics). We LOVE our ENT doctor and totally trust her, but I am just so nervous about the fact that the has to have general anesthesia. I know the procedure is common and relatively low risk, but just wanted to hear any stories on if your kids or kids that you know have had tubes?

All this being said, I know that in the end this is the right choice for him, I hate giving tons of antibiotics and this way the fluid will drain and he'll be a happier baby :)

 Thanks!

  • I totally understand on being nervous, I was a wreck when my son had it done last year.

However, it has done him wonders! Before he got the tubes we were at the doctor probably every 6 weeks...once he got the tubes we didn't go back for ANY sick visits for a year. It totally changed him and his health.

    Best of luck!

  • May - Thanks, this makes me feel SO much better! I know it's best for him. He's already a super happy baby but it will give me piece of mind knowing that he's hearing well and that we won't have to go back to the doc every month for ear infections!

  • My DD has not had tubes but I think out of my circle of friends she is the ONLY one who hasn't!  She's only had 1 ear infection and didn't get that one until she was 18months. We got really really lucky.

But I've not known a single person who's had complications or any problems from getting the tubes in.  Each of the moms has been scared but everything has turned out perfectly and they got great results!  Good luck, I'm sure it's unnerving!

  • Thanks Debby, I'm going to be going nuts until after he wakes up, but that is just a "mom" thing. :) I know it's really common so I am going to try to stay calm and just go with the flow. The hardest thing for my son will be not eating! He can't have anything to eat/drink after midnight on the night before, the surgery is at 7:30 AM. So that will be rough on him, he screams for his 6:30 AM bottle each morning!

  • He will do just fine and feel a lot better! I had tubes when I was younger and I'm glad. I had 12 ear infections before I was a year old. I have unfortunately still suffered, but it could have been a lot worse. I actually ruptured an eardrum this year because the fluid built up. I would hate to have that happen to a child, it was excruciating.

  • We have been there - twice actually - on the same child. Even though we had to have it done twice I'd do it again if needed. My DS was allergic to most of the meds that his ped prescribed for him. So while he did not get a ton of ear infections - treating them became a problem. We had them placed and he had no ear infections at all for about 2 years. One of the tubes fell out and he immediately got a ear infection so we had them placed again. I was definitely nervous when he had them placed but the procedure was so fast, there were no complications, he recovered quickly and it was such a relief to not have to deal with ear infections any more.
  • We were all set to get DS tubes after several boughts of middle ear infections, but when we took him to the ENT that I like, he was clear.  I have kept an eye on him and he is still clear.  But yes, I would say get the tubes, I am in the profession, and I see kids everyday with tubes, and they work wonders.  I also see kids who have had the serous fluid in the ears for years w/o tubes and see the side effects from that.

    Good Luck!
