No beef for MSPI?

I have been looking around online and I have found several lists that say no beef in an elimination diet.  Really?  What do you ladies think?

Re: No beef for MSPI?

  • a lot of meat has soy and/or milk in it.  I think if you read the ingredients and get organic meat you should be fine.. but i don't eat meat so i never really read about that.

  • My daughter is very allergic to milk and casein and has a mild allergy to beef.  My allergist said those can go hand in hand because milk comes from cows.  He said it may even be a false positive to beef because of her milk allergy.  We were instructed to avoid it.

that makes total sense since my son couldn't have chicken for a long time and the allergist said that there is a shared protein with chickens and their eggs.

  • we haven't had any issues with beef- but we buy from a butcher that we trust and can talk to.  Pretty much every time I talk to the butcher at our local big box grocery store- they're clueless.  Lots of beef products (like sausage, pre-made beef patties, etc.) all have milk in them as a binder.  Pork sausage and deli meat can be made the same way.

  • I've been fine eating beef. I usually buy organic or grassfed from whole foods or trader joes. this was before LO was diagnosed as well, so it wasn't a change for us. good luck!

  • If you're doing a true Total Elimination Diet, the only meat allowed is turkey. Beef can cause reactions, as can chicken, fish, & pork. Turkey is pretty hypoallergenic. If you're just eliminating milk & soy, you could probably have it, but I would listen to your pedi. Maybe eliminate for now & then challenge it slowly in a few weeks.

ETA: And it's not necessarily the soy or whatever that can be mixed with beef. Beef & milk share some proteins, so your LO can be allergic to both.
