why won't Evan say...

Grandma... or any form of it? (Nama, Gamma, Gigi, Nana etc)

I feel really bad for my mom. Evan just will not say Grandma, or call her by anything. He started saying "Papa" a few months ago (we always said grandpa, he came up w/ papa on his own)

His language has really taken off in the last month.... he says 3-4 word sentences and basically repeats anything you say. I show him pictures of my mom and ask him who it is and he's just silent. But show him a picture of anyone else and he names them.

Yesterday we were at my parents and standing in the kitchen. Evan pointed to me and said "momma" then DH "dadda", my dad "papa" My mom said "Evan who am I?!" and he just turned around and said "all done!" It's breaking her heart.... even though it's kinda funny! I told her she just needs to stop trying so hard and he'll say it eventually. I think he knows we want him to say it, so he's being stubborn!

Re: why won't Evan say...

  • I hear ya.  DD can't say grandma either and my mom spends so much time with her.  She says things that shock me - applesauce, Seabreeze, hooray - recently all clear as day, but no grandma.  She does say GiGi and Nana for my grandmas, but just silence for my mom.

  • same issue here. grandma seems to be last on M's list or words to learn too... although i thought for sure it was going to be mamma!

  • Justin couldn't say Grandma so he started saying "Maga", it kinda just stuck and the Grandma's thought it was so cute. Now when he does say Grandma, my mom is like, "no, I'm Maga", so I think it's a keeper.

  • Grandma was one of Reed's later words too.  He used to be able to name all of his aunts and uncles, but would not say Grandma.  My MIL was always trying to get him to say it.  I don't remember when he finally did.  It is one of those things that you wait and wait for and then it happens and you forget that it was ever an issue.  Now he is obsessed with family lineages.  He will say "Grandma M or Grandma T" and if I say "Grandma M" then he say "oh, right, Daddy's mommy"

It took quite a while after he started saying Papa to say Gamma. It bugged my mother, too, but we just kept referring to her as Gamma, and eventually it clicked.
  • Awww I think it's probably just one of those crazy kids things. For some reason maybe that word is tougher for him to say. For the longest time T called my Mom Gaga...which she came up with on her own and my Mom loved it. She did the opposite of E and would never say Grandpa until one day out of nowhere she just started calling him Pa. Then about a week or two later she switched from calling my Mom Gaga to Grammy! So I'm sure it will come with time. Tell her to not stress about it.

  • Well, R seems my mom very seldom....but he calls her Nana and has for awhile. He sees my dad's wife all the time and just now started addressing her as Grandma. Before he wouldn't call her anything, but would rattle off everyone else including his cousin Graham.

When I was little I called my Grandma....Magraw.

  • My nephew was the same way! Must be something about little boys. Stinkers. I forget the circumstances with how he finally said it but when he did it was really apparent that he was just refusing to say grandma and it wasn't that he couldn't say it. Have you tried getting him to say it if she's not there?
