Austin Babies

oh, for shitssake.

Homeboy's crawling out of the crib 85x and waking at the asscrack of dawn/napping like crap now.  You may remember he was doing that when we tried the toddler bed a few weeks ago, so we put the crib back together and had one blissful week where he kept his butt in the crib and slept well.  Well, I left town for a few days, and come back to this news from my mom and DH.  NOW WHAT?  Back to the toddler bed, since it's the same behavior and probably safer than him breaking his face escaping the crib?  Or would you crib tent him?  I feel like he's past the point of that being effective (or even safe?) but I can not deal with him lacking that much sleep and being a crackpot because of it.  Sad

I'm going to get one of those wake up clocks to try to help with the mornings, just not sure what I should do now as far as crib v. bed.

GAH.

  • Have you thought about going to a twin or full bed with bedrails?  If it were me, I wouldn't be comfortable with the crib exiting and do the toddler bed thing again or just move to a bigger boy bed.  Did you do the bed rails with the toddler bed?  Maybe he'll feel more secure that way?  I'm sorry.  The toddler bed thing does take time to get used to, we definitely know from experience!

  • What about one of those crib tents?

ETA:  just noticed you already mentioned that

  • Have no fear.  I will be there tomorrow to regulate on his ass.  Or be a new distraction and rile him up even more.  YAYS!
  • I would just bite the bullet and move him to a big bed, maybe try a twin or full like bride said? It sucked for a little while but now C sleeps just fine. There have been some issues regarding crib tent safety and I think some of them were recalled for a little while.

Okay, speak to me slowly.  What's the difference between the toddler bed (aka, converted crib) we had him in and a twin/full bed instead?  I guess I'm asking why that would be better than what we're doing now.  Anybody?

I just ordered the 'OK to Wake!' clock.  Gets here Friday.  If that LLCG regulating business doesn't do the trick sooner.

Well, there's really not a difference, I guess, I was just suggesting it since the toddler bed was a no-go. But, when we switched C we made a HUGE deal about it being her big girl bed, yadda yadda so maybe he would see it as more of a difference from the crib if you did that? I really have no idea. We just switched her to the double because we had the mattresses and I didn't get the toddler bed rail to go along with her crib.

  • I have to say, Austin sleeps 10X better than before in toddler bed. The twin bed did the trick for sure. He sleeps so good now. Actually SLEEPS in his own bed.

  • the toddler bed uses his crib mattress and is usually (with the conversion from a crib) surrounded by three sides of crib and a little rail.

the twin or full bed whatever your crib converts to, will just have the head and foot board. We have our bed against the wall and used a store bought rail that went almost the length of the entire bed.

We can climb in and cuddle him off to sleep or help sooth him in the big bed, you can't comfortably climb into the toddler bed (i could get in, but yo that's cramped)

So more wiggle room for them. I think if we have another kiddo we'll skip the toddler bed and head to the big bed right away.

sorry it's sucktastic your way right now :

Alex hated the crib and the toddler bed, so we're moving him from our bed to a twin mattress on the floor. He didn't like being in a toddler bed because he didn't have enough room to move around without whacking his head on something. With the mattress on the floor, it's not big deal if he rolls off.

I'd take the crib away, suck it up and deal with the toddler bed or a twin/full mattress on the floor. You may have to be patient for a week or two while he gets used to the new sleeping arrangement. When we moved Meredith to a toddler bed, she got out of bed a lot the first few nights because she liked exploring her room. We kept a monitor on and out of her reach, and we closed the door at night so she couldn't wander through the house.

We skipped the toddler bed too w/Nico. He just moves so damn much at night he didn't "fit" in a crib/toddler bed. I've mentioned using a bunkie board instead of a boxspring for our full size bed in Nico's room. It makes the full size bed almost as low as the toddler bed (it's crib that converts to a full size) so that I don't have to worry about him breaking his head if he did try to climb over the railing. He never tried, he ground the 12 inch space without the railing and would slide out.

BTW, Has anyone talked to you about 3 years olds? 2 is nothing compared to 3. A is just getting you prepared for 3.

  • Did you use Ferber before? The tips in Chapter 5- "The Problem of Limit Setting" worked for us when transitioning DD to a big girl bed from a crib.

Dude.  Are you trying to get her to off herself?  SHHH!

  • If you haven't tried the crib tent, I would do that. It gave us another 6 months until Em decided to claw out of it. I would definitely try that or put a lock in the inside of the door.
  • We first used the converted crib to toddler bed for my #2 and we had the same problems you are having...not going to bed and coming out of his room a billion times, night waking and thinking 4:45a was an acceptable wake up time. He did sleep better once we got him a twin size mattress. I do think he felt more settled on the bigger mattress. He still had issues for awhile, but they eventually got better. Hang in there!
  • my advice is, go for the twin bed.  BIG BOY bed, make it a big hurrah.  he's 2.5, i wouldn't crib tent him since it is a temporary fix and he will be ready for a bed soon enough.  my kids at 2.5 would have given you the side-eye if you tented them and then screamed in dislike.  hello, cage! ;)

eve is a little younger than A but she's in a twin bed and i'm too cheap for a toddler clock so we use an old alarm clock and she knows she can get up when the music is playing. it works for us, so hopefully the tot clock will help.

hugs- bedtime issues are one of my least favorite parts of parenting.
