Food Allergy

How will I know?

At the pedi today she only used the word intolerant. How will I'm ow if it is an allergy to milk/dairy/soy?

  • I didn't want to delete without reason, but I saw the post below. When do they test for an allergy versus intolerance?

  • I would ask your pedi, but I'm not sure if they can test before 6 months?

they can test as early as couple of weeks old, but not without reason.  If there is no real reason it is 6 months, like pp said. But i'm pretty sure every allergist is different.  So i would ask your pedi for the scratch/prick test and if it comes back positive than go on to the blood.

How old is your LO that you suspect the allergy?

It is my DD.  She just turned 3 months.  She was diagnosed with reflux at about 6 weeks.  Then yesterday I noticed she had two mucosy poopy diapers in a row.  I took her in and they tested her feces.  I am going on a dairy and soy elimination diet since I EBF.  And then we will go from there.

Should I have them scratch test her now?

I don't think they will do a scratch test at this age. You can call the allergist and find out. But i think doing the elimination diet is perfect.  I would perhaps go a bit further and do the elimination diet of the top 8 allergens and then introducing one by one every 1 to 2 weeks (i did 2 weeks). it's ridiculously hard but doable.   Your totally a head of the game. I wish i followed my gut and did this from the beginning instead of waiting until my son has an ana reaction..

Thanks.  I think we will start with dairy and soy like the pedi recommended.  They asked me to call in 2 weeks (not expecting to see A LOT of improvement but...) wanting to know if there was any change.  We are back in about a month for her 4 month check.

I am starting a list of questions to ask then.  I will be including questions about other allergens (like nuts).  We are lucky in that her reflux and now bowel issues are the only two responses.  She has clear skin (other than a little baby acne) and is a little gassier than most but is not uncomfortable.

Do you have any other recommendations on things to do, not to do, or ask about?

going milk/soy free is not that bad.. Can be hard at times but totally doable (i think i just wrote that on a different post lol).

I would google MSPI recipes (milk soy protein intolerance).. also get dayia cheese (it's rice cheese and no milk or soy in it).  Get "so delicious" ice cream and yogurt (make sure it's the soy free one). Avoid casein b/c it's milk protein but not labeled as such sometimes.  Use fortified rice milk for yourself so you're getting added calcium (i wish i did this.. i had to use supplements)

as far as questions to ask.. just have the test done and if it comes back positive.. he'll send you to do blood work. if it's negative, ask him if you should eliminate other things.  good luck! hope there is no allergies..

Also, if the test come back negative but your elimination diet worked and your baby is fine, than it might be an intolerance so don't add it back to your diet and don't introduce it at 1.

Thanks so much for helping me!  This seems doable but a lot to take in so quickly!  The pedi said to eliminate anything with casein, whey, or soy in it.

Just so I understand, should I get her to an allergist now or wait?  Or will the pedi do a scratch test?

Some doctors won't even test a child that age. I personally would probably do the diet first for 2 weeks and then go see the allergist.  If she was on solids already i wouldn't wait but she's only on milk and still really young so i would illuminate it first. Others may have different opinions though.

There are many vitamins that do have soy or milk in them so read the ingredients. Not sure about prenatals..  I know i have gummy vitamins for my son and they don't have any milk/soy..   you should still check ingredients in everything.. even soaps and shampoos.   Nothing surprises me anymore.

  • great message board! This is pretty much the same chat I had going and the same type of questions.  It's so nice to know there are others out there that can be so helpful....although I know your help comes at a cost as you have all been through this with your children.  Thank you all though for being willing to share all of your knowledge with those of us that as just starting on this journey!
  • My daughter was skin tested at 3 months old for the top 8.  Milk and casein were both positive.  She had a violent reaction to milk though, so that is probably why the allergist did it.  My pedi blew off my concerns, so I made an allergist appointment to get my answers.

I agree with PP though who said to try the elimination diet first of the top 8 (for yourself) then add back every week or two.  Remember that it can take 2 weeks for dairy to be out of the system, so you may not see an immediate change.

ETA: What part of Ohio do you live?  I can recommend you my allergist (who is amazing), if you are near Cincy.
