Food Allergy

New to Board

My son has been thought to have a milk allergy since he was an infant.  He had problems with my BM at a very young age.  I did my best to eliminate milk and dairy, but nothing seemed to help.  We did a reducing substance test, and it had a positive result (meaning that something was passing through his system not being absorbed).  We switched to soy formula, and he seemed to be happy, although his eczema remained.  All solid foods seemed to go well.  At 1 year, we tried cow's milk, and that did not go well.  He would refuse to drink it, and when he did, he would vomit shortly thereafter.  At 15 months old, he almost always has eczema, and a runny nose. Plus he often has itchy ears, and a wheezing sound when he breaths.  He is often irritable, and seems to have a tummy ache.  And he often runs a low grade fever.  We finally scheduled an appointment with an allergist, but it is a few weeks away.  I was just hoping for some insight from moms who have been through this before.  Do my son's symptoms sound in line with food allergies?  I am on the fence if I think it is allergies or a digestive matter.  Although, he does have regular BMs, usually 2-3 times per day.  As an infant, he would go days without a BM, and when he did, they were mucusy.  Of course, I am looking forward to his appointment.  I am hoping to get some answers, but I was just looking for some advance insight.

I forgot to mention, he is currently drinking Soy milk.  Even though he still has the minor symtoms mentioned above, he doesn't have the vomiting like he did with cow's milk.  What is the substitution if you can't have cow or soy milk?

Re: New to Board

  • YES, Definitely sounds like allergies.  From what you have said, he is probably allergic to milk and soy.  He probably has even more allergies to foods he is eating based on his symptoms.  Have you cut all milk and soy from his diet?  I would be inclined to cut the top 8 (dairy, soy, wheat, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts, and treenuts) from his diet until your appointment.  Sounds like he is suffering a bit.  Poor thing!  I hope you can get answers really soon!

  • YES absolutely!  especially the wheezing, the eczema, itchy ears.. all of that sounds like a food allergy.  Pretty much the main symptoms.  I'm sorry!  My son had puffy eyes and i didn't link allergies to his symptoms (which were all like yours plus swelling)

Like Miller said.. if i was you i would avoid the top 8 allergies! (milk, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish, shell fish) and i would also avoid sesame (it's a growing allergy) --this includes avoiding casein, whey and tahini

I would get him off soy milk and put him on fortified rice milk (call your doc first).  50 or 60% of children allergic to cows milk are also allergic to soy.  I'm also not a fan of soy after doing my research.. way too much estrogen and it's regenerated.. not the safest drink IMO (and this is my unprofessional opinion!)

the main substitutes are FORTIFIED rice milk, hemp milk, oats milk, coconut milk, almond milk (i would avoid almond milk until your LO is tested for a nut allergy though). Make sure it's fortified though.  My son drinks rice milk.  And for baking i use oats milk (it's thicker).

  • Thanks for the replies and advice.
