LO isn't gaining weight

And I'm freaking out. We just had our appointment with pediatric surgeon, who wants to operate on my little guy in the next few weeks possibly (hernia), which was overwhelming enough. We have an u/s tomorrow. But when they weighed him, he was still 9 lbs 3 oz, which is exactly what he was on the 2nd of June, and then he was already only in the 2nd percentile for weight. That means 20 days no weight gained. The surgeon wasn't concerned. As soon as we got out of there I called the pedi. We're going in on Frdiay to weigh him before and after nursing to see if he's getting enough. He has enough wet and poopy diapers. I dunno, just so worried about my little guy. I love him so much, ya know? I don't want him to not be great Eta fix title of post--bumping from my phone.

Re: LO isn't gaining weight

  • I can understand your concern.  Because you love your LO so very much you are going to get the right interventions and soon enough he will begin to gain weight again and months from now this will be a bad but small memory.  I wish you luch and I hope that the Dr's are able to fix your little one so that he will grow big and strong@!!!

I bought a baby scale to do weighed feedings at home. It's accurate to half ounce. Was the best $60 I spent on Amazon. Allowed me to keep breastfeeding and supplement when necessary. After few weeks he was on exclusive breast milk with little to no use of bottles of bm. I also switched to football hold. I thought I would never be able to get my supply up and breastfeed successfully but its now almost 3 months and he is solely on breastmilk and gaining well. Good luck. P.s. don't be scared to supplement with formula. I did for two weeks and it was good because it gave him the strength needed to stay awake during nursing.

Thanks. I needed to hear that about the formula. I called my LC, and I already feel a bit better. It sounds lioe I accidentally ended up with a perfect storm of events--weaned off the shield, my supply stabilized so I no longer had oversupply (which apparently had been helping him), I upped my exercise, he startd sleeping a bit longer, etc. My dh has a scale for work that goes that accurate. Did you weigh every feeding?

Yes I weighed him before and after every feeding. I still do, but go back to work soon so will be pumping more.
