Houston Babies

Children's Memorial/Complete Women's vs. St Lukes/Women's Specialist

I am looking for a new OB and a hospital to delivery my third baby (start TTC in a few months). I LOVED my old doctor and am still considering driving back to Beaumont for her, but I was NOT thrilled with the hospital there and LOVE the idea of spending time with my baby in recovery (which didn't happen there). I didn't get to touch Lorrie for hours, and Ellie I saw a few minutes in the OR and then was wheeled by her window in the nursery for a while before they brought her to me in several hours. I am a nursing mom, do not want my baby fed formula, I co-sleep, and I might consider a vba2c if a doctor is willing, but I could also easily see myself opting for the 3rd c-section as my recovery from the sections was not that bad, and the only real c-section regret is NOT getting that time with my baby right after the birth. I've read a lot of positive things about both these hospitals/practices, but then you also find negative things as well. Also if anyone has another doctor to recommend I'm open to that. I am located out in Baytown so I'd love to find someone close that delivers at either hospital. I'm pretty sure I've ruled out Texas Women's all together though. [Poll]

  • cannot say enough good things about Dr Zepeda at Women's Specialist.  I had both my c/s with him (granted they were at Methodist) and he did everything in his power to give me an amazing birth experience.  Plus his NP Sarah is probably one of my favorite people on earth, she really makes his practice outstanding.

    Ditto!

kat.in.the.hat is the one who recommended Dr. Zepeda, and I couldn't have had a better c-section experience. My first c-section was with a different doctor and hospital in Houston. The recovery this time was 10 times easier than my first. He said my incision for the first one was way too low, so he went in a little higher. I was able to move around much quicker this time and was never in major pain. I feel like he is a highly skilled surgeon who really takes his time and takes pride in his work.

His nurse practitioner really is wonderful. She was on maternity leave during my c-section, and I was so sad. I can imagine she would have made the experience that much more personal and warm because that's just how she is.

This is neither here nor there, but I just have to say that my anesthesiologist at St. Luke's was incredible. He seemed so knowledgeable and thorough and so concerned about my comfort level before, during and after the surgery. He and Dr. Z worked really well together.

There was some concern about my baby's health at first, so my husband accompanied him to see a TCH doctor in a bay just outside the OR. My husband was never separated from our baby. Once he was given the all clear, the baby stayed with me through the remainder of my surgery, recovery, the ride to my room, his first bath, all his testing, etc. I nursed him in recovery within 45 minutes of birth.

  • There isn't enough money in the world to convince me to step foot inside StL/Tx Children's after they way they botched our recovery.

I did however really like Dr Zepeda and his NP.

  • I saw Dr Bobo with Women's Specialists and she's fantastic. I had a super super easy c-section recovery, and she's a nice combination of open-minded and cautious. She's pretty conservative, but doesn't try to push things (the c-section ended up being my call.... I had a huge kid.)

We had an uncommon complication (DD aspirated fluid and had trouble breathing) so I didn't get to have her in recovery -- she spent 2 and a half days at TCH. I wasn't super happy with TCH, but mostly I think that was the NICU experience and a pretty unsupportive nurse the first time I went down there after I was able to walk.... and they kept her long enough that even the nursing staff was telling us they had no idea why she was there still. But St Luke's itself was great for me.
