Head favoring one side while sleeping?

Anyone else's LO favor one side over the other when sleeping? DD keeps rolling her head to the right and I have tried everything to get her to roll it to the left. I put her to bed in every possible position to get her to look to the left, but nothing works. She'll bounce her head back the other way within a half hour of sleeping. I am so worried that she will get a flat spot.

LilyBug favors her left side.  No matter how I put her down to sleep, she always ends up turning to the left.  So far no flat spot, like you I am worried about that.  I just try to make sure she has plenty of tummy time & I turn her head to the right sometimes when she is sleeping.

  • Yep - ds#2 is ALWAYS on his right side. Just make sure you give her lots of tummy time and in his swing (whatever keeps him upright while awake!).

Talk to your pedi about it, but I'm sure your lo will be fine. My ds#1 was a right-sider too but he never developed a flat spot or had any other issues.

  • DD is favoring her right side as well. I talked with her pediatrician about it and he gave me some exercises to do with her several times a day to help with it.  He said it could be a shorter muscle causing her to favor that side (called torticollus) or just that it is more comfortable.  I would talk to the ped about it.  He said it was really nothing to worry about at this time!

  • Same as PharmacyQueen. LO favors his left side, especially while sleeping.  He has a little bit of a flat spot there but the pedi never seems overly concerned about it.  She recommended tummy time, "sitting up" (swing, supported chair), turning LO's head to the other side and holding it, and doing things with your opposite arm (hold, feed, change him facing a different way).  I think this happens to a lot of babies these days.

  • DS1 did and his head is a hot mess, although to be fair, my head is the same way.  Big flat spot.

Don't wait for a flat spot to appear.  If they won't turn their heads, like DS1 wouldn't, roll up a receiving blanket and put it under them on the side they favor.  It will take the pressure off of that side.  You can also do the same by putting something under the mattress, but I think just putting in under the baby works best.

  • At our 2 month appointment on Monday my Pedi pointed out a flat spot on the right, back side of LO's head.  It wasn't until she told me that I started to realize how much he favors it.  I am working hard on lots of tummy time, and during daytime naps making sure he is either on his side, or a place a rolled up receiving blanket under his head so that he'll tilt to the left a bit more.

I am getting ready to go buy the Boppy Noggin Nest head support to put in his crib for the night.  It has great reviews for helping round out flat spots.

For the record, he has been sleeping in the Rock 'n' Play since birth.

  • Thanks everyone. I'll check out the boppy noggin nest tonight, but interestingly enough, DD was sleeping in the RnP for the first month and a half because of reflux. Maybe something about the RnP doesn't allow them to turn their heads as naturally as if they were sleeping flat. I'm curious now.
