The pill and BFing

I still am not on BC (hangs head in shame) and need to do something about it.  I was on the pill before getting KU and did fine on it, so I am happy to go back to it.  But I know it can screw with your supply.  C is eating more and more solids, and after 1 we'll introduce cow's milk, so she'll need less from me.  I still want to nurse but more for her comfort, the bonding and the immunities, which obviously doesn't require a huge supply.  Can anyone share any experiences with going on the pill vs. milk supply?  If it's going to dry me up too much I'll have to skip it and figure something else out, but I really am not keen on most other forms of BC- and DH is sick of condoms.  Not that we need them that often... :p  Thanks!

  • My midwife suggested the mini-pill while bf-ing.

From what I've heard from a couple sources you need a back up plan with those like condoms or charting, especially after introducing solids.  Have you heard that at all?

  • I know far too many people who got pregnant on the mini pill to recommend that.  Plus I think after something like 6 months they usually want to switch to the regular pill.    My guess is that you're far enough along in your BF'ing that the pill wouldn't mess you up.  Do you get your period?  Does that cause a supply dip?  If not, I'm guessing you'd be ok.  And if not, you can just go off of it and it should come back.   It seems to be a crap shoot whether it messes with your supply or not.   You could get an IUD or a diaphragm though.  Or I have heard the sponge is back but I never found it in the brief period where I cared about BC between kids.

    Thanks!

  • I dont remember, sorry! It was so long ago. I didnt look into it too much b/c I was NEVER going to take the pill again (I was super sensitive to the hormones). I've also heard great things about an IUD.

  • I was on the mini-pill while BFing and had to stop taking it because it was killing my milk supply.

  • I was on the mini pill until I fully weaned my kiddo, and was constantly nervous it wasn't enough. My doc told me it was 80% effective and they assumed the nursing made up for that other 20%. So depending on how serious you are about preventing I would probably chart or something. I guess if you are only nursing occasionally the regular pill would be fine. (vs nursing for full nutrition in the early months). I'd probably try it at least.
  • With the regular pill, it isn't just about affecting your milk supply, the regular pill has estrogen in it which is not good to expose your baby to. If it's just for a few months, you could use a barrier method or FAM.

Ah, that's no bueno. I am hoping to nurse for a while yet, til at least age 2.  Guess that answers that.  Thanks K!

I was told that since I was only nursing 1-2 times a day  or less(from age one to two), the regular pill was okay. I didn't do well with hormones at all though, so I quit taking them after about five months. The mini-pill didn't effect my supply, but I hated it. Plus, they say you have to use a back-up method. This time around, I don't know what I'll do. IUD's kind of scare me and I don't know why.

  • I was on the mini-pill w/ no back up w/ both kids and nursed them for 12 months and 14 months. You do need to take them around the same time everyday. I am pretty fertile I think - pregnant first try both kids and didn't get pregnant on the minipill. But that's me. I prefer B/C that prevents ovulation which limits options.

Me too (two close friends and one acquaintance).

Further down the line, maybe look into Mirena? I absolutely love it. It  was painless (far less than a pap), I never have to worry about it, it was 100% covered by insurance, and I haven't had a period in f-or-e-v-e-r. Not everyone has the same experience, but worth a look.

  • Have you considered the Nuva ring?  It has estrogens and is just as effective as pills but isn't systemic so you're going to have less of an effect on supply/baby.
