The past few days, Lucas has been OOC - he latches on, then proceeds to squirm, pull, you name it. My tatas are already very fragile and this is not helping:( any ideas?

1) I was having a forceful letdown and it was hard for her to take in that much milk all at once, so she would squirm and pull off. Kellymom.com has some sections on forceful letdown and what can alleviate it (if that's the problem.)
2) If I hadn't burped her or if she had a burp stuck, she would squirm and latch on and off (usually while being fussy.) Sucking helps to temporarily relieve that burpy-full feeling so that's why they'll latching on at off.
Hopefully other mommies will chime in if they've had the same experience with their LOs.
I thought it might be a let-down issue so I've been angling him back - it helps a little, but not much. And I figured out when he has gas b/c he won't latch at all. I'm tempted to just pump at this point b/c I'm in so much pain. Nipples were not meant to be twisted and pulled like this:(

No, no they weren't. I remember that pain so clearly. I know this is cold comfort, but the pain does lessen over time.

thanks, I appreciate the support! what ended up helping you? I have no idea when my letdown occurs so I guess my best bet would be to lay down so it's not so forceful for him?

With my kiddos, I found it was either from gas or my letdown. I made sure to burp really well and then I would hold my kiddos upright for 20 minutes after eating. The holding upright seemed to help with the subsequent feeding. I always nurse so that he is semi-upright. Although it was so convenient for me to nurse lying down, I found it horrible for the gas issues. When my milk was abundant, I would pump for 2-3 minutes before starting to nurse so that I didn't have a huge letdown. On the other hand, when I had low milk supply then my ds would become frustrated and get really squirmy.
And, your boobs will recover. It really sucks though. Mine is at the stage where he likes to teeth on my boobs and that is really not fun.

Can you try to pump a little until your let down slows a little? Is he choking when he's squirming or pulling off?

The really, really painful latch-on lasted about three weeks. When I wasn't nursing Molly, I would put Lasinoh on my nipples. This helped with the cracking and stinging feeling. It would bring tears to my eyes every time she latched on. By about week 4, they had become less sensitive and she had become more efficient in her latch (i.e. not using her jaws-of-life mega grip on them. lol!)
As for her squirming and pulling away, I would lay back propped up by pillows in the bed to nurse her. My letdown was fast and I always felt a prickly feeling in my nipples when it was happening. Sometimes I would pull her off long enough to let a little milk leak into a burp cloth and then have her latch back on.
She's also a gassy girl, so a LOT of the time, stuck burps were her issue. I would just burp her more frequently through a nursing session.

I could pump beforehand but when he gets near me, you'd think the kid was never fed! he gets SO excited.
he's not choking but he makes these gasping noises - again, acting like it's his last meal or I'm going to take away the boob or something.
AJL - I apply lanolin just about after every feeding. fortunately, the pain goes away before the next feeding, but I cringe just thinking about having to feed him again;( I remember your post saying how much you disliked BF and you were thinking of going to formula. I'm telling myself the same thing - one day at a time.
and the LC just called me back - she is ok with me pumping and supplementing like every other time. which is a relief since I figured she'd just want him on the boob.

One day at a time was all I could manage for awhile. It was flipping hard! And then like magic, at 8 weeks, we turned a corner. I breast fed Molly until she turned 5 months old and then we kind of petered out. She's now on formula and I'm happy that we did breast feed as long as we did. I never expected to make it that far at all.
Re: BF with a squirmy baby
Molly used to do this for a couple of reasons:
1) I was having a forceful letdown and it was hard for her to take in that much milk all at once, so she would squirm and pull off. Kellymom.com has some sections on forceful letdown and what can alleviate it (if that's the problem.)

Breast feeding is not easy.
Hang in there!
