Anyone been through a house/garage fire?

How does this all work with insurance. We had a garage fire today, and there luckily was no structural damage, but there is a lot of "stuff" that is ruined. Strollers, a seat to our van, tools ect. ?

We do have coverage on our contents, but how does it work ?

I did, and since it is not displacing us, we will have an adjuster assigned within 2 business days. I was just wondering kind of what to expect.

Our adjuster came out, asked to see everything damaged, made a list of all of it and then asked us what it would cost to replace everything. We had to give amounts for each item. For example, for an old style TV, to replace it with a model today of the same size with flat panel. I know some companies are more strict and have a list they go by though, so our adjuster might have just been awesome. They cut us a check within a week I think it was.

Yes - me too! I hope the process with the adjuster is easy and you are able to replace everything that was lost.

We live in a small town, and our fire marshall has decided it to be an "undetermined cause" . DH and I will decide if we need to have it investigated further after talking to insurance tomorrow.

I suggest considering hiring your own adjuster. If you do, find one with a low fee. but high rates of recovery.

Know your policy. Take lots and lots of pictures of things, even if you cant tell what they are. Know if your policy factors in replacement or value. If it considers depreciation, what they will look at to determine value. Dont accept the first offer.

We had a fire in 2008, document everything. We lost out big time because they depreciated everything so much that it was ridiculous. We also didn't realize that we didn't have to use whom they recommended to clean everything. We ended up having *** lost or broken.
